I never finished 8 but I've always found it to have the most recognizable soundtrack out of the series mainly due to how the audio is recorded

The fully orchestrated soundtrack has this huge echo-ey quality to it that I really do love
I think I listened to enough of those DQ music compilations back during lockdown that I'm able to find a lot of tracks from the series to be memorable and catchy

Stuff like the cave themes from 5 and 8 have really stuck with me, and the latter game's overworld theme is just jawdroppingly beautiful
I just heard a scream outside in the distance that sounded exactly like that one scream in the Woodfall Temple theme from majora's mask
I don't know how it happened but Syril's mother is apparently MAGA now
Even if they wanted to retain the classical style (which people would *hate*) he'd still bring such a unique sound to the table

Please get MASASHI HAMAUZU to do the next DQ game that man is cracked
Most of 11's music is pulled directly from past games, and those legacy tracks end up being some of the best ones in the game when compared to the new ones

Keeping him around at like 90 years old was just not a good idea
Sugiyama being dead does give Square a great opportunity to branch out with the music for Dragon Quest though, cause I do agree that they held onto him and that same musical style for just way too long
Again I think a lot of the negative discourse surrounding his music specifically comes from people just really disliking classical style music in video games, rather than anything concrete about his work in general, and I wish people would be more honest about that
I shouldn't have to preface with this but obviously I hate sugiyama, I'm just trying to talk about his work in a normal way without being immediately dismissive

He has done "epic" boss themes, like 3's final boss theme, 4's boss theme, and 8's boss theme, but it's not like common imo
His boss themes have almost always been focused on being unsettling and building tension I think, rather than being hype or epic like what Uematsu and most of his contemporaries did
Dragon Quest boss themes are rarely something that I actively want to listen to, but I think it's just cause sugiyama had a completely different conception of what a "boss theme" should even be

Lord have mercy upon you all cause its time to start posting the Bubsy drawings. Raunchier stuff to come in like, an hour, there's a lot of it.
When working with weird furry characters I don't know how I'm supposed to just "know" where shadows are going to be cast and how they should conform to certain shapes
I've been drawing digitally for almost 7 years now, but I still don't really understand shading and I wouldn't know how to ask anyone for advice on it

the Trails games are great because when you're playing trails in the sky 1 or 2 you're constantly laughing at everyone cryptically saying shit like "even HE'S getting involved now" and then by the time you're five games deep YOU'RE the one going "HE'S getting involved?!" when some fucker shows up
HAS IT REALLY BEEN 14 YEARS
I'm getting like cuteness aggression from hearing Skales' voice again
