Why is health care so high? It's not the doctors, it's all the sludge demons who thrive off the paperwork. Why is college so expensive? All the useless administrators who wield way more power than faculty ( (believe me I taught at these schools and watched them take over).

Complex forms, "accidentally" dropped calls, malfunctioning websites, support chatbots, billing "mistakes," all ensure you don't get the health insurance benefits you deserve, that you don't get your refund, that you don't get unsubscribe from that expensive service after the trial ... or ever.

Bureaucratic disentitlement is deliberate. It’s how systems quietly push people out through paperwork. A politics of abundance has to start by tearing that machinery down. And it's not just the government. The private sector employs sludge to defeat us. See

If I were to build a new national party in the US or EU, it would be abundance-based—and begin with a merciless assault on administrative burden and bureaucratic disentitlement. @ezraklein is right that bureaucracy blocks progress, but it also disenfranchises.
