There's a knock at my door, and I hastily wipe my eyes. I might be crushed under the weight of all this loss, but that doesn't mean I have to subject anyone else to it. I don't know who to expect at the door, but it's definitely not Ski, his eyes ablaze with a fire I don't expect from a Winter.

"Okay, hear me out. I know I should--" He cuts off whatever he meant to say when he sees
me. "What happened?"

"What? Oh, it's nothing." I laugh to dismiss the lump still sitting in my throat. "You needed
me?"

He rubs my cheek with his thumb, wiping away the tear track I didn't quite get and leaving a trail of coolness behind. Jack would've frozen the layer of water upon my face. There are miles of DIFFERENCE between their touches. I tear up fresh at the thought. Because that's what I need.

"Tell me you're not crying over him," he says softly.

Phil sprang to his feet. “I chose you!” The words rang out, filled with desperation.

“And I chose you!” Tears welled in her eyes.

Silence hung heavy in the air. He kept his eyes locked on her. They were at an impasse, and he didn’t know what he could say to make a difference.

She thought he was willing to support her while she followed her dreams, but really, he wanted to be the main provider, and when she started making more money than him, he was insecure and bitter.

When they entered the room, the emergency lights spilled through the openings, lining the walls with jagged contours of claws, hunched figures, and twisted limbs. Hale couldn’t tell if they were beasts, or tricks of a brain drowning in cortisol and adrenaline, his amygdala hijacking perception into a survivalist’s nightmare.
The facility groaned—metal shifting, doors rattling, the unseen pressing against the structure like the whole place was breathing.
An event was unfolding on the edge of Hale’s peripherals.
