The MSNBC commentator saying that most political violence has historically come from the left just once again showed how we suffer from failing to learn history. Lynching, pogroms, race riots, the political violence that ended Reconstruction, and against the Civil Rights Movement. Come on.

If you are in a school district with a pro-public education candidate, sign up to help--make some phone calls, hold a meet-and-greet in your driveway, put a sign in your yard, give a few bucks.

We need to restore it at every level. But one place to start is locally and local school boards are the most accountable and see-able representatives of democracy. We all need to support school board candidates and members who support public education and democracy.

Thread--and those three backlashes are only some of them. Another example is the Red Summer of 1919, when white mobs attacked African Americans in Elaine Arkansas, Chicago, and Washington DC, followed by Tulsa in 1921. Backlashes have often led to American pogroms.

Excellent thread. I'll just add that there's a long history of blaming liberals for reactionary political dynamics that were cultivated by coordinated political campaigns by the far right. There is no law of nature that produces "backlash politics." It's politics (and propaganda) that produces it.

You can't teach U.S. history without "divisive" narratives. Slavery wasn't "unifying." The Japanese incarceration wasn't "unifying." The anti-immigrant Operation Wetback (real name) wasn't "unifying."
It's history's job to tell the truth, not cover up past racism to pave the way for future racism.
