Each generation seems to rediscover the riddle of organismal agency: are organisms agents that pursue intrinsic goals—and how could we know? Our 📕 gathers historians, philosophers & scientists to explore this debate—now available in paperback!👇 www.routledge.com/The-Riddle-o... #philsky #HPS #evobio

Hermit crabs are known to use their shells for dynamic touch,
sensing their surroundings through bodily contact with the shell.
In a similar way, testate amoebae might use their shells
as part of a distributed sensory system, perceiving aspects of the environment through this extended structure.

Confined motile bacteria can self-organize into a core–shell structure through oxygen-mediated feedback between metabolism, diffusion, and motility. Interesting.

Next week, I will be giving a session talk at an interdisciplinary symposium on campus, under the theme “The Architecture of Aquatic Organisms: Adaptive Behaviors in Active Niche Construction.” My presentation will introduce my recent research on the behaviors of testate amoebae & caddisfly larvae.

The 'Behavior Across the Tree of Life' Workshop has finally kicked off! Here Gianmaria Dani maps the problem space for the event. How should we address behavior beyond animals and avoid the risks of anthropomorphic projection?
