Have you booked a flight to Spain yet?

I was assured by a Supreme Court justice it would only be a minor inconvenience.

You can't logic your way out of being burnt out. Unless you're me. Who should be able to do it and it's a personal failing that I can't

There are people with enough money to cover military payroll once, but few if any are liquid enough to do it.

Yes, I definitely understand how many people are in the military, how much they make, and own a calculator.

Trump: "I had a very wealthy person who called -- a donor, a great gentleman -- and he said, 'if there's any money necessary, shortfall, for the paying of the troops, then I will pay it.' Meaning he will pay it. How about that?"

Shows a really deep commitment to American racism when you shoutout to 1890.

Today in doing political science research right now is very depressing--from Downs 1957:
2. A democracy is a political system that exhibits the following characteristics: a) Two or more parties compete in periodic elections for control of the governing apparatus. b) The party (or coalition of parties) winning a majority of votes gains control of the governing apparatus until the next election. c) Losing parties never attempt to prevent the winners from taking office, nor do winners use the powers of office to vitiate the ability of losers to compete in the next election. d) All sane, law-abiding adults who are governed are citizens, and every citizen has one and only one vote in each election.

Tariffs have rapidly increased the price of coffee—a drink with almost no nutritional value and lots of functional substitutes. Yet coffee may also be the one thing Americans can’t live without, @elcush.bsky.social writes:
The Drink That Americans Won’t Give Up Without a Fight
Coffee has almost no nutritional value and lots of substitutes. It’s also, apparently, too important to lose.

If there’s one thing I associate with the Trumps it’s family values and traditional Christianity.

Eric Trump: "We're saving Christianity. We've saving God. We've saving the family unit. We're saving this nation. I mean, DEI is out of the window, Benny. You no longer have Colin Kaepernick kneeling for the national anthem. You no longer have Budweiser going woke as hell. All of this is dead."

I don’t interpret this as resignation. Tom will keep reporting; he just won’t have building access. Not sure what else reporters can do under the circumstances, and I suspect result will be the opposite of what OSD is hoping for.

2011. Deputy chief had a habit of selling land he didn’t own and using the cops to enforce the illegal sales. Allegedly spent 3 years in prison and then was restored to his old job, where he promptly exacted revenge. And 💯 on the governor.

Didn’t help that the Khost deputy police chief was insanely corrupt and the chief was an alcoholic. Easy to turn the people against the police when they’re just straight up predators.

“An amazing number of voters mysteriously showed up”

Trump’s approval rating was 12 points underwater and falling (Gallup). The economy shrank 3.5% in 2020, and we were in the middle of a pandemic.

It was about as mysterious as a Scooby Doo episode.

Emmer: "We had Donald J Trump for four years, which gave us a bit of a fighting chance, but then an amazing number of voters mysteriously showed up in the 2020 election and Joe Biden had the next four years ... if we didn't Donald Trump right now, Maria, I don't know what the future would be"

Sending Afghans back who helped American and allied forces is a grave injustice which makesnl it less likely in the future American forces will receive cooperation and assistance from locals.

America saved him from the Taliban. Trump wants to send him back.

America saved him from the Taliban. Trump wants to send him back.
He supported America’s war, escaped Afghanistan and started a family in the U.S. Then ICE arrested him. If he is deported, he expects the Taliban to kill him.

In all the years of DADT I only had one case and it was very clearly a guy who wanted out of his enlistment. No idea how many COVID vax cases fit in that category, but it wasn’t zero.

Come to think of it, that’s another thing the kids today won’t understand. I’ve had at least 16 home phone numbers. My kids may never have a different number from the ones they got in high school.

I read this and immediately called to mind the number of my girlfriend from 1986. I can also recite my number from when I was 5. Weirdly, I don’t remember any of my own numbers after that (there were a lot of them)

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Do the "Trump stopped it after an additional 10 months" people think that maybe they stopped cause they accomplished their goals on that additional 10 months rather than it being some trump magic...?

Knowing the needle points north* does not mean you can navigate.

*for those in the back, the needle does not, in fact, point true north.

This is like those dudes who think they could fight a bear.

Even before Google Maps, I can assure you that 76% of Americans could not navigate with a compass. Most couldn't even read a topo map. This is something I'm actually very good at, and it was never a common skill.
