That we have a tagging system now is great, especially on ao3. If we go with “fandom back then”, you may come across a work that simply mentions “lemon” but may feature rather explicit content without warning. Sure you can just click away if you don’t like it, but it can also be avoided by tagging

For tagging itself, I once got invested into a multi chapter fic that didn’t warn for its tragic end, nowhere in the tags or author’s note

I mean it wasn’t the end of the world for me, but it did make me upset because I was following this fic for a long time without knowing

IMO, it’s better to tag appropriately so people can avoid what they dislike or find what they like easier. It’s not that you’re a jerk for not tagging, but it can make people upset. This doesn’t just count for t/b discourse

But top bottom roles were invented by lesbians… like stone top/pillow princess definitely were

And outside of this discourse, SEA artists and writers also prefer tagging it correctly, although I don’t understand why you’d do that for sfw
