This is cover is from my most recent release: Dancing in the Purple Rain. #Dystopian #SciFi #technothriller Sometimes being special can make you a target. And when they can manipulate memories, who can you trust? (See my bio for links.) #WritingLifeMonthly #BookSky #WritingCommunity
Promotional image for the techno-thriller novel Dancing in the Purple Rain by Judy L. Mohr. The book cover shows a person in a purple hooded coat standing in a rainy, neon-lit dystopian cityscape. Overlaying text describes the book's key themes: "Dystopian," "Altered Reality," "Government Corruption," "Strong Female Protagonist," "DNA Modification," "Secrets," and "Post-Apocalyptic." At the top, the tagline reads: "The rain is starting..." and the subheading above the title says: "Being special can make you a target." The genre label “Techno Thriller” is featured at the bottom.

LOL Okay, I did not expect that connection. How did you get into writing literary scifi when you have THAT background? That's cool actually.
judylmohr.com
So... You write crime fiction? That's where I see that background going.

You hear a term and scratch your head. "What does that mean?"
That's how I feel about many of the terms associated with LGBTQ+ classifications. So, I created a glossary for the unknowing parent who is struggling to get their head around this new world. #MondayBlogs
LGBTQ+ Terms: A Glossary for the Unknowing Parent
There are so many terms out there for gender and sexual identity. Here's a glossary of some terms for parents to have open discussions with their teenagers.

I think the ones who say that you need to have a degree in writing are aiming for the literary awards that have no meaning or relevance to the general masses. Many successful commercial fiction writers DON'T have degrees in writing or English. But they know a good story when they see it. #WriteSky

I 100% agree about this one. My PhD is in astrophysics. However, I've retrained as an editor, and I'm a very good developmental editor and writing coach (if I say so myself). My former life trained me to see the subtext and pay attention to the details. #WritingCommunity

I think that all authors have to have a degree in writing. I have a BS in mathematics and a MS in clinical mental health. You can write with no post-secondary education. You don't have to know everything about writing in order to write a good book.

📚 #WritingLifeMonthly October Day 13 📚

When people tell me that they wish they could write a novel, my instant response is "Why don't you?" Their answer tells me if they were serious (and just don't know where to start), or whether they were "humoring" me (and trying to sound encouraging when they were really being disparaging).
judylmohr.com
Yep, life has a bad habit of getting in the way of a lot of things.
judylmohr.com
Agreed! Yes, we need to love what we do, or would lose the motivation to keep going in the face of all the "pricks" who want us to work for free. But we shouldn't be expected to just give away our art. Just like editors have a right to earn a living wage, so too do writers. #WritingCommunity

The two myths that @traceyleewrites.bsky.social added to her comment for today's #writingLifeMonthly prompt were good myths to debunk. But I'd also like to add:

* write what you know (because #writers are good researchers!)
* if you get the traditional contract, you have it made. (Total bollocks!)

For tomorrow morning...

The image is the current opening paragraph from my current work-in-progress. It will likely be edited multiple times before published in 2027. Yep, you read that correctly. 2027. But I need to get off my ass and finish writing it. #WritingLifeMonthly #AmWriting #Thriller #Technothriller #SciFi
Snippet from my work-in-progress: The shooter lay on his stomach with his eye pressed to the scope. 600 meters. It was a baby's shot. Any sniper could make this shot. But he didn't trust anyone else to do it. This shot wasn't about making the immediate kill. It was about dragging out the torture, making sure that the hunters knew they were now the hunted.

Understood. Technology: It's great... when it works!
Glad you were able to sort it.

Your file structure looks just as chaotic as mine... except my files all live within my Scrivener project (or perhaps I should say multiple Scrivener projects, because I tend to have dedicated projects per book).

Complete side question: Why does BlueSky say that you have in "invalid handle"? I've never seen that warning before... and I'm curious as to what is going on there.
judylmohr.com
There's a 3rd death: "The death of the author" where your intentions no long have a role in the reader's interpretation. Basically, the writing takes on a life of its own, independent of the author.

I'm witnessing it now with my novel, and my novel only came out in August 2025. #PretendPanel

I feel you on this one. My characters are known for running away with their own story... and I'm just along for the ride.

However, in the editing phase, they will let me work my magic. But not until editing!

#pretendpanel, Stories write themselves in my head and my challenge is to get the words written fast enough to keep up with it.

That being said, at least one of the characters I write about in my stories are really alter egos of me. (1/2)

I have to admit that I could never get into Terry Pratchett. Same with Douglas Adams. But it turns out that I'm not a fan of omniscient voice. It doesn't keep me engaged as much as I would like.

Never read Anne McCaffrey. Don't know why, because hubby has so many of her books on the shelf. But I was a fan of Arthur C Clarke and Isaac Asimov myself.

It's cool to know that some of the Clarke novels are now being turned into movies. Could be a bad thing, though. We'll see.

I still like Michael Crichton's #technothrillers. I'm scare to go back and read them again, afraid that the editor brain will want to tear them apart, but I can remember the stories like I read them yesterday... though it's been at least 20 years. #PretendPanel #BookSky #SciFi #Thrillers

I haven't really thought about this before. Partly because I'm focused on just getting the work out there. But I already know that my novel has taken a life of its own, with readers adding their own interpretations regardless of my intentions. If fascinating to watch. #PretendPanel #BookSky

I get what you're saying... I think. (Almost too philosophical for this time in the morning.) But I still need to be able to "finish" a manuscript so I can publish it. And to "finish" it requires that I focus on it. LOL

The hardest part about #writing for me is staying focused on the one project long enough to finish it. This is one of the reasons why my production schedule is years out. #WritingLifeMonthly #WritingCommunity #AmWriting
