Because Ukraine relies on the USA's satellite spy network to know a few things:
1. When bombers are launched from the far east and to expect missiles.
2. For HiMARS targeting.
3. Possibly other targeting like StormShadow but not SCALP/EG.

And then there's patriot air defence.

putin's little trip to Hungary, if it happens (he has to be able to fly there over EU countries which have banned it), is just another stalling tactic.

The US is still naive (or stupid) thinking putin is open to negotiations.
