“Police in Chicago also routinely arrest people for the singular charge of resisting arrest—a phenomenon experts say is concerning, and could mean the problem is far more expansive than the settlement data indicate.”
"What was the person resisting if there's no underlying charge?" said Samuel Walker, a professor emeritus at the University of Nebraska and a national expert in police accountability. "That's just a gigantic red flag that the officer probably used force and is using this resisting arrest charge to provide cover or an explanation."

Resisting arrest has long been used as a “cover charge” by police (in Chicago and elsewhere) after they use force against someone, as I reported back in 2018: www.chicagoreporter.com/chicago-poli...

I’ve seen some accuse those who protested for a ceasefire as being disingenuous by not celebrating this one so for @forward.com I wrote about the difference between relief and joy and what the ceasefire can’t do

forward.com/opinion/7754...
I know exactly why leftists aren't celebrating this ceasefire
Why not celebrate the ceasefire? Because, while it's a relief, it won't undo all the suffering and death of the past two years.

I had no idea Seinfeld’s kid worked there, but it’s perhaps the least surprising thing.

welcome to the new era of CBS News, where brave truth-telling takes precedence over spelling Zohran Mamdani’s name correctly

The only thing funnier would be if it ends James Franklin’s career.

As a Northwestern fan I take offense to that. But in this case, it is extremely funny.

I resonate so deeply with this piece—like you, I’m the grandchild of Holocaust survivors and the family archivist. I also was a volunteer docent at the IL Holocaust Museum in college, when the real-life Sam was still speaking to school groups on a regular basis. Thank you for writing it.

#BREAKING Trump administration asks 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals to stay Thursday's order from U.S. District Judge April Perry in Illinois v. Trump.

Perry's order blocked the deployment of National Guard troops within Illinois.

I keep thinking about this detail from today’s hearing: Federal judge April Perry said she began getting threats “about 10 minutes” after she was assigned the case seeking to block Trump’s national guard deployment. This is the world we live in now.
jonseidel.bsky.social
Perry: "I agree with you about the seriousness of threats, generally, across the United States right now. I don't think there's a single public servant, really, who is not being subject to threats.

"Mine started about 10 minutes after I got this case."

Federal district judge April Perry blocks the Trump admin’s deployment of National Guard troops in Illinois. Says it applies to any troops, not just the Texas NG troops who are already here.

Perry says the order will say defendants are "temporarily enjoined from ordering the federalization and deployment of the National Guard of the United States within Illinois."

The entire piece is excellent, and strikes the tone that is so crucial for this moment. But I'm most intrigued by Meredith's question near the middle: "Who is served by pretending we live in an America different from this one?"

Bridging my current life in Chicago and my past life in D.C., I argue today at @newrepublic.com that Democrats should ~never~ vote to fund this government. Make John Thune blow up Senate rules and Republicans wholly own the U.S. extra-military military doing war crimes against us, funded by us.
The Case for the Forever Shutdown
Senate Democrats actually allowing the GOP to stop funding the government is only the first step. Now they have to make the case that Trump’s government is illegitimate.

Those 34 years would have been 26 years if the Cook County Conviction Integrity Unit had cleared Francisco Benitez instead of denying him in 2015. He's one of at least 21 people the group rejected who were later exonerated. You can read about it in my @injusticewatch.org series Denying Innocence.

Two horrible fucking years.

I don't know what to say that @sirosenbaum.bsky.social and I didn't already say just ten days after it all began:

The hate crime charge against Alexa Wilkinson for photographing vandalism of the New York Times building is a dangerous precedent, no matter what you think of Wilkinson.
