I walked through a local shopping centre yesterday and was greeted by the sound of veteran DJ & broadcaster Jimmy Young, who had a career as a singer in the 50s. It may have been intentional as he died on November 7 2016, aged 95 but I often wonder when the music we love will reach its sell by date!

#Folklore Taurus the Bull. no 2 from
Lucky Charms, a series of 50 Wills’s Cigarette Cards (published 1923). I will be posting one a day. The art is splendid and the information provided is an intriguing 1920s perspective on lucky charms and associated folklore.

Second sign of the Zodiac, April 21st to May 22nd. Ruling
Planet, Venus; correct metal, Copper. Those - born under Taurus were thought to be endowed with mental and physical strength, strong-minded, clever, fearless & emotional. The correct Taurus gem is the Sap-phire. The Sapphire is of a deep blue colour, and the darker the blue the greater its value. The ancients wore Sapphire charms for protection from poison, plague, fever, diseases of the skin and to bring peace and
happiness upon its wearer. The eyes were rubbed by & Sapphire to preserve them from injury by smallpox. King Solomon's seal is said to have been a Sapphire.

The tree mix. Pedants will notice that I missed Guelder rose off the list. There were 30 of those per plot too. Impressed with my Latin? The trees are labeled in Latin by the supplier so it helps us ID which stick is which at this time of the year!

Isn't lichen brilliant?

Some lichen stuck to the branch of a tree. This will also happen to your face, if you stand on the top bit of Dartmoor long enough.

Look at this fucking amazing lichen on a much smaller tree branch. It's like tinsel for people who like acid folk.

The furry lichen on this footpath sign has obscured the lettering on it which tells people where they are going. Oh well. Walks are way better when you get lost anyway.

It's absolutely normal, well-adjusted behaviour to come back from walks with a lichen-coated stick, and I will not hear otherwise.
