"Think about what you are trying to accomplish" remains core advice for corporate training (6 sigma, etc.) today

The fact that Spain was fascist for decades and is now a highly rated democracy gives me hope for our own situation

On the list of things that are less of an ultimate solution than EVs, hybrids are right there near the top.

I don't like Magical Realism, because it reminds me of badly written fantasy with poor and inconsistent world building.

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat
johnsmillie42.bsky.social
He thought his laundry was done, but he was deceived! For there was a damp article crammed deep within the bowels of the fitted sheet that had yet to surrender its moisture.

-Magical Realism is lazy hack fantasy where you cant even commit to consistent world-building
johnsmillie42.bsky.social
-Literary fiction is the worst genre. I've read too many stories about saving the universe to give a shit about you growing up in New Hampshire but with marginally better prose.

-Great Expectations suuuucked but that may have something to do with being forced to read the abridged version in 9th grade
-The most personally meaningful philosophy I've encountered in literature was in the modern doorstopper fantasy series The Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson

-Blood Meridian is terrible, just an unreadable borefest of spitting and gratuitous violence
-Pynchon is unreadable, Gravity's Rainbow is a rare DNF for me
-I've tried reading Egan's Pulitzer winning "Visit from the Goon Squad" like 7 times and just can't get into it

"Experts and insiders warn that the tumult within the Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations and the DOE more broadly is eroding the private sector’s trust in the federal government and its ability to drive energy innovation," reports @mariagallucci.bsky.social: www.canarymedia.com/articles/cle... 🔌💡
How Trump gutted the team meant to build America’s energy future
The Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations had over $25 billion to help companies scale novel low-carbon technologies. Trump is working to erase it.

Something they should be even more embarrassed about
johnsmillie42.bsky.social
They are not, that is indeed the core of my second point about sudden mass dislocation being quite bad
johnsmillie42.bsky.social
It's because the jobs just move around.

I am a financial analyst working on spreadsheets instead of a clerk working in a paper ledger book.
johnsmillie42.bsky.social
I very selfishly would like to live in a world full of high levels of social trust and human flourishing. Mine mine mine, gimme gimme gimme
johnsmillie42.bsky.social
And how do YOU deal with the live lobsters, sir?!
johnsmillie42.bsky.social
On the one hand, eliminating jobs while getting the same output (or same jobs with more output) is the only way things get better.

On the other, massive sudden dislocation tends to be quite bad

On the third, I don't think LLMs are going to do it, given studies showing productivity drops.

Next time they make up some thing about offshore wind and whales, ask about this.

Republicans are aiming next to dismantle the marine mammal protection act, which protects whales, dolphins, manatees, polar bears, and sea otters.. among other ocean wildlife. 🦦

I love it. Makes me happy.
Weird that I'm now seeing your post here after I just read about the bill to end the 1970s marine mammal legislation to protect these beautiful creatures.

The fact that the Chevy Bolt started in 2017 and that there is still no full BEV Corolla or Prius should be deeply embarrassing to Toyota
