In 2017 I started taking photos of books I've been reading: to keep a kind of record for myself and to celebrate books, authors, ideas, and pedestrian interaction with one's surroundings.

As other cities get on with the job of enabling affordable and efficient forms of mobility, Birmingham falls further and further behind by insisting that our roads should be reserved for those of us who own cars.

And that's a choice.

For well over a decade, I cycled along this road. It was quiet and had painted lanes so felt safer than many other roads in Toronto. Meanwhile, in Birmingham, UK, the equivalent would be Raddlebarn but here there's no infrastructure and just resistance from the council to make a safe corridor.

Toronto’s Cycling and Pedestrian Projects Team continues to hit it out of the park. Out for a ride today and here’s just some of the new cycling facilities that I came across. New concrete planters and permanent curbs on Harbord Street. /1

Safety for people cycling or convenience for 6 car owners?

Always good to know where Labour stands.

Tremendous news, Elsa. And, obviously, so well deserved!

Agreed. And everywhere should have joined up protected cycle lane networks like the Netherlands for the great many who can.

By decreasing space for cars, we can achieve both goals.

Important findings in this @ippr.org report by @beccam-c.bsky.social & @msingerhobbs.bsky.social on the inequalities entrenched by #UKCarCulture.

Cycling is the most affordable, efficient means of urban mobility. But planners and politicians have removed that option for a huge number of people....

It's okay not to be patriotic.

Never thought I'd see the day where I'd be so genuinely moved by an ad for someone running for office.

UNTIL IT’S DONE, Ep. 4: Sylvia Rivera

In the 1970s, queer New Yorkers had been pushed to the margins of NYC. Our trans neighbors faced immense cruelty. But in Sylvia Rivera, they found a champion.

As we combat Trump’s politics of darkness, her legacy can light the path forward.

I've lived in Birmingham six years. In that time, so far two cyclists have been killed directly along my short commute.

Here's wishing big lawsuits on the people who have the power to prevent these results but prefer car owner convenience instead.

An increasingly important plus of pedestrianization is how it will make the crimes of coward kidnappers much more difficult to carry out.

I am. And I'm excited to see who they'll stand. I'll also put some thought into people I know who might go for it!

If someone running for office owns a Dodge Charger and drives it in a city, that's all you really need to know.

Lower income New Yorkers are more likely to ride the bus s. Also the house he used to live in before he split with Sandra Lee is worth 1.8 million dollars (third link) and had five bedrooms and six bathrooms and at 5,000 sqft meets the historical definition of a mansion
.
@ZohranKMamdani
’s “plan” provides no relief for working families who take the subway, and unnecessary benefits to wealthy New Yorkers who take the bus and can afford the fare.

I focus on working families, while

In 1776, a Scottish housepainter called James Aitken set out on a secret mission to destroy the British navy and win the War of Independence for the United States. His story is the core of my book, EMPIRE ABLAZE: The American Revolution and the Atlantic Working Class, out next summer with Verso!
The cover of "Empire Ablaze: The American Revolution and the Atlantic Working Class," which features an image of an eighteenth-century building on fire, with small sailing boats visible on a river in the foreground.
