“The United States has no obligation to host foreigners who wish death on Americans”

Then why did you host this guy?

3/ It could be about ‘wokery’, or statues, or flags, or just about anything to get you angry, so long as you don’t ask them for solutions to your problems. Because when all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a culture war”

- Pete Buttigieg

2/ They don’t know how to deal with rising house prices, rising energy prices, or what to do about the inflation shock that’s coming. That’s not great territory for them to be on, so they find a culture war issue to distract you.

1/ “We have politicians who genuinely don’t have a lot of answers to the serious problems the public are struggling with. They have no answers when it comes to poor productivity. They have no solutions to wage stagnation, or tax rises, or student loans.

This might seem an odd choice & I might be influenced by the fact that he is one of my mother’s friends, but what about Muhammad Yunus? Nobel prize winner, has a PhD in economics, Medal of Freedom winner, ex-Chancellor of Glasgow Caledonian University & as far as I know, no public opinion on Brexit.

Americans have to face a hard truth. One of their two major political parties has been captured by the Far-Right.

“But why does Nietzsche think the night has no stars, nothing but bats and owls and the insane moon?”

- W.B Yeats

5/ And the reason for Trump, MAGA, Brexit, Le Pen, the AfD & the rise of the Far-Right is staring us in the face.

“The Centre-Right is collapsing into the Far-Right”

Like it did in the 1930’s.

And we all know how that story turned out.

4/ But instead “good economics means I can now vote for my values without any fear of the economic consequences, and my values are firmly 'right-wing authoritarian'".

3/ But when you factor in local conditions, it was “locally rich” white people, those who had higher incomes than others in their zip codes, who were much more likely to support Trump than those who were locally poor. These isn’t “bad economics makes me angry so I vote for the far-right”.

2/ The majority of people who voted for the Nazis in 1933 were middle income, poorer than that voted for the Social Democratic Party & the poorest voted for the Communists. Similarly, while It’s true that on a national level, poorer white people were more likely to vote for Trump than richer ones,

1/ People want to believe “inflation caused 2024” because it’s far more comforting than facing the reality that being Authoritarian has very little correlation to personal wealth & that these people r spread throughout society.
johngage1.bsky.social
These aren’t Communists who wanted to redistribute wealth but “accidentally” voted for the far-right. They voted for Trump and MAGA because their values and priorities line up, and their values r firmly Far-Right Authoritarian.

“Early in life I have noticed that no event is ever correctly reported in a newspaper, but in Spain, for the first time, I saw newspaper reports which did not bear any relation to the facts, not even the relationship which is implied in an ordinary lie”

- George Orwell, Homage to Catalonia (1938)

I think it’s uncomfortable for many Americans to face the reality that these people have always been there. What’s different this time is that one of your two major political parties have been captured by them. The centre-right has collapsed into the far-right.

The long collapse of the centre-right Republicans to the far-right began with the development of a media ecosystem dominated by a lunatic fringe of that party. The centre-right establishment thought the Frankenstein they created could be used & controlled until they realised too late, it couldn’t.
