It's held every 5 yrs and there's only 20 pianists left in semi-finals. And it's dominated by Asians.

6 Chinese, 3 Japanese, 2 Koreans. Both US contestants are Asian. Only 2 are Polish. And no Europeans?

Frank Sinatra caused “The Columbus Day Riot” when he returned to perform at NYC’s Paramount Theater #OTD ’44.

The theater only sat 3500 and 35,000 fans showed up. And refused to leave their seats for hours.

The police were called to forcibly remove them.

Gershwin's Porgy and Bess was his most sophisticated work, an opera lasting 4hrs.

At a ‘try out’ in Boston, he made substantial cuts and refinements before premiering it on Broadway #OTD in NYC.

It ran for 124 performances. but was a commercial failure.

At 19, Rachmaninoff premiered his Prelude in C-sharp minor #OTD. His 1st composition
earned him 40 rubles.

But it became so popular that he called it ‘his Frankenstein’.

It's still my favorite, and used in films, orchestras and jazz musicians all over.

That’s one quarter of the orchestra.

The Chopin Competition has 85 pianists vying for the gold medal.

It’s a massive national event for Poland. In Warsaw a special Chopin Tram features live pianists. And Garrick Ohlsson chairs the jury.

It's a 1st. For 98yrs a Pole has presided.

Police arrested Ella, Dizzy and Illinois Jacquet at Houston's Music Hall for gambling #OTD.

They'd just ended the 1st set of a concert for an integrated audience in Jacquets hometown.

They paid the fines at the police station and hurried back for the 2nd set to end the show.
