🌍 On International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, new research highlights how nature protects us from extreme weather.

🌊 In the Cayman Islands, coral reefs and mangroves provide £60 million annually in flood protection - equivalent to 30% of the islands’ hotel and restaurant sector value. 🧵

Graphic displays an image of two gannets by Richard Jackson, labelled with the English and Latin names (Morus bassanus). There is a 'key facts' box with the following adapted facts - has a wingspan of 170 - 192 cm, has an average lifespan of 17 years, eats fish, lays 1 egg, is seen year round, and there are 295,000 pairs breeding in the UK. The SMP logo is found in the top left hand corner. This week’s workshop in Belize City gave a valuable platform for stakeholders to align on a unified approach to monitoring

This work also contributes to Belize’s progress under the Blue Bond Agreement, aiming to protect 30% of its marine environment

We co-developed a plan which will:
🔍 Integrate biodiversity & fisheries monitoring priorities
🔗 Consolidate existing initiatives & align with national conservation & fisheries management goals
💰 Establish a cost-effective system for data collection, management & reporting
