We have fully updated our Top 100, and this time we were doing so knowing that before long our current No. 1 (Roman Anthony) will graduate. So we spent a lot of time reporting, analyzing and discussing who should be the heir apparent to be No. 1.

We have our answer.
jjcoop36.bsky.social
So at Baseball America we have never used active service time to determine prospect status/rookie graduation for us because there is no official public record of it. (We've asked multiple times).

But we are going to do so going forwards, thanks to working with @ethanhullihen.bsky.social.

Aug. 15 1919 Cleveland game
June 4, 1993 Cincinnati game (game 2 of doubleheader).

I will leave this for someone else to take the relay on this and try to take it further. If anyone has newspapers.com access, they may be able to find that something similar to this has happened before, or more likely that these are very different plays.

Closest I can find to tonight's GIDP:

Cleveland 9-2 GIDP in 1919 (Aug. 15). And a Reds' game that had a 7-2 in 1933 (June 4, Game 2).

Those are the only two GIDP I can find that end with the ball in the catcher's hand and began with the ball in an outfielder's hand.

The two most possible analogs are a Cleveland 9-2 GIDP in 1919 (Aug. 15). And a Reds-Cardinals' game that had a 7-2 in 1933 (June 4, Game 2).

But without a ton more digging, I can't seem to find any of those plays that are all that similar to what we saw tonight.
jjcoop36.bsky.social
There are plays that look like trap/no-trap confusions. There's a 9-3 GIDP in a 1998 Blue Jays game and a similar play in a Phillies-Pirates 1986 game where it appears that multiple baserunners stood at first and were retired.
jjcoop36.bsky.social
The Cubs had a 4-3-6-3-2-5-8-3 DP in 1960.

Rundowns aren't that craziest way to see an OF involved in a GIDP.

Then there are shifts in late innings where an OF was brought to the infield to add a defender: in 2019 the Cardinals-Marlins game had an 8-4-3 GIDP that looks much like a 6-4-3.
jjcoop36.bsky.social
So I get latched onto things like this and just keep digging.

Thanks again to Retrosheet (invaluable). There are 49 GIDPs in MLB history (in games where PxP is logged) where an OF was involved.

All are weird. Rundowns may be the most common. Ralph Garr hit into a 4-3-6-3-8-3 DP in 1973.

Blake Snell's career is so fascinating.

He's qualified for the ERA title only twice in his career (so far).

He's won the ERA title (and the Cy Young) both times he qualified.

He's 81-62, 3.15 for his career (1,158 IP).

He's also a truly dominating postseason pitcher. 7-3, 2.58 in 69.2 IP.

To summarize.

MLB history (as logged by Retrosheet so not every game, but most MLB games since 1903).

1,266 862 plays before tonight.
30 862 DPs before tonight.
0 862 GIDPs before tonight.
jjcoop36.bsky.social
There are 30 other DPs (not GIDP) that are 8-6-2. I spot checked 10 of them, and they were all as you would expect, Fly ball to CF. Runner tries to advance, gets thrown out.

My search in Retrosheet's extensive and invaluable Play By Play file has failed to find a single example of an 862GDP logged in Retrosheet (which isn't every game, but is most MLB games all-time).

1,266 8-6-2 plays.
0 of those 8-6-2 plays that are GIDP.
jjcoop36.bsky.social
When is the last time we had an 8-6-2 DP with both outs being force outs.

Has it literally ever happened before?

We will be live on YouTube with the Hot Sheet show at 3:30 p.m. ET.

We're talking to Twins prospect Brandon Winokur, and talking which organizations stood out in our Hit+ and Stuff+ rankings.

Yeah dumb of me...sorry cards fans.
jjcoop36.bsky.social
Congrats to the Brewers. Fittingly it was the pitching that did it.
jjcoop36.bsky.social
In the 22nd inning this is no longer true.
jjcoop36.bsky.social
We have now had 21 innings of do-or-die games in the past two days.

And every inning has been wonderfully excruciating.

In every at-bat of those 21 innings the game has either been tied or the trailing team has had the tying run at the plate.
jjcoop36.bsky.social
Brewers have a one-run lead. They also have elite RPs still available.

Cubs have an uphill battle.
jjcoop36.bsky.social
Yes. But that doesnt change anything about my post.
