I'm so sorry to learn that D'Angelo is dead at age 51. I thought the world of his music: Only Prince among their contemporaries surpassed his brilliance. A concert he gave 10 years ago in Glendale, PA, remains one of my all-time favorites. tinyurl.com/yckbsbcj
How D’Angelo Is Making ‘Black Messiah’ Even Stronger
In a live show, D’Angelo and the Vanguard give a fiery, complex, often joyous performance with deep roots in African-American popular music.

Of "Raven and Crow: The Mythology, Art and Science of our Favorite Black Birds" by Ellen Williams, Booklist writes: "In a wonderful integration of art, mythology, science, and storytelling, the author delves into the outsize role these two large black birds play in human consciousness."

It's not just Trump who is thoroughly ignorant about American popular culture and the arts, as Johnson's pandering comments prove. This is as soulless, spiritless administration as we've ever seen in Washington.

I loved Jonny Greenwood's score for "One Battles After Another," but every now and then, as a Radiohead fan, I could identify when he was playing an instrument, particularly piano or guitar. I'd love to hear if other Radiohead fans were similarly distracted. youtu.be/YzhjTeSz9y4?...

Censorship is so 1984. Read for your rights.

Today kicks off #BannedBooksWeek, and this year's theme reminds us that the right to read belongs to all of us, that censorship has no place in contemporary society, and that we must defend our rights.

Grateful to Meredith Anthony and "Deadly Pleasures" for the glowing review of my "A Song for Katy Shayne." She says it's "poignant and full of heart, intriguing and deeply satisfying," praising it as "real and engaging and exciting." My sinister riff on Steely Dan delighted her. Grade: A.

I see. But it was magical to a 15-year-old kid from Hoboken who slept overnight on concrete at Shea Stadium and used his delivery-boy tips to buy a ticket to Game Four. Jesus, we thought, we can win. "We" being not just the Mets, but also ragtag delivery boys.
