THE SMASHING MACHINE – Kinda hated this film and its risible script. Emily Blunt’s character exists only to take care of Mark Kerr or to argue with him. Those are her only two functions. She has no interiority, and the film doesn’t even complete her arc, treating her as a footnote in the epilogue. 📽️

ORWELL: 2 + 2 = 5 – There’s a dizzying amount of information in this essayistic documentary. Here's a film that uses George Orwell’s words as a lens to explore our present moment. It jumps around frequently – across ideas, timelines, and geographies – it oversupplies and we're expected to keep up. 📽️

I did indeed. A perfect meeting of director and subject. It's densely packed and there are so many ideas to engage with. And hearing Orwell's prose is a treat (even as the parallels to current events are deeply unsettling).

ROOFMAN – Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst are good together in this stranger than fiction story. But there’s little impact as the movie smooths over its inherent complications – e.g., the systems that'd make this military man turn to a life of crime – in favor of feel-good storytelling. #TIFF50 📽️
