Angels in the Snow

I ride the sledge down the frozen hill,
a mountain to that child
wrapped in a woollen coat
and snowball-soggy sheepskin mittens.

I must be going a million miles an hour,
hurtling toward
the outstretched arms of my father,
who catches me
just before I fly off into space.

We tumble to the marshmallow ground,
a constellation of limbs beneath the tree.
And we lie there, hearts racing,
laughing angels pressed into snow.

I look through frosted branches, brittle as bone.
Vampire-toothed filigree
cuts against the winter-blue sky.

And I remember the willows
on the plates in my mother’s kitchen,
where everything is delicious,
and nothing is broken.

A poem about falling in love:

Heliacal Rising

I saw you once,
as the world stirred from its slumber.
A fleeting shimmer in the pale hush of morning.
A cipher the sky whispered only to me.
You vanished before the sun could notice,
but the echo of your light stayed behind.

The next day, I searched the horizon again.
You were there.
Lingering longer this time.
your glow brushing the edges of my waking mind.
You didn’t speak, but your presence
was a language I suddenly understood,
a warmth settling into my quiet corners.

Each morning after, you rose higher,
pulling me gently from the shadows.
A constant in a transient sky.
A brilliance that grew with every shared breath.

I wondered how I had walked this earth
without ever lifting my gaze to find you.

You, the axis of my heavens,
the fire that burns through every clouded thought.
I no longer search the sky for signs.
You are the sign.
The light that guides me.
The star that never fades.

$Poem: La Terreur I was there when reason dressed in terror, a scaffold crowned with whetted steel. The sky looked on, a pale and silent judge, while justice danced in a cloak of crimson. I witnessed the fall of monarchs and the raising of their heads. My blade, a tongue that whispered final truths, each drop a salute to fractured liberty. The crowd a chorus, wild and raw, their chanting breath the wind that honed my sharpened face. History chose my shadowed mantle to be the hinge on which revolution turned. Death given with the finality of a God, Robespierre, priest at my stained altar, his power burning without remorse. Feeding me names until I knew them all, and at last, I claimed his crown.$

Judy with the Flaming Hair

She lit up the screen,
a radiant supernova
burning too brightly,
collapsing in on itself,
tumbling into a black hole.

Always feeding the fire,
creating a blaze of legend,
even as it consumed her.
Offering her fragile body
as sacrifice to the pyre.

Gently withering
in the heat of combustion,
while avaricious hands
fueled the lapping flames
with the greed of parasites,
scorching the soul of a woman
who once set the world alight.

A star turned to ash,
her fierce light still flickering
through celluloid dreams.

Behind the Camera

Snapshots on windswept beaches,
Beside a lake, glassy and serene.
Husband, kids, and waggy-tailed doggies.
I’m the ghost behind the lens unseen.

Photos afloat on stormy waters,
Halfway up a mountain’s spine.
Friends squint into the biting wind,
I’m tucked behind the frame, just fine.

Images cradling babies in arms,
First-day grins at the front door.
Their faces beam with practiced pride.
I’m missing from the scene once more.

Group shots where I hover at the edge.
A wisp of blonde hair on one side.
It's me, I think, behind the fern.
That blur pretending not to hide

Because I flinch at my own image.
Is that really how I sit and stand?
She’s not the me I keep in mind.
She’s soft, and worn down, far too bland.

So I turn the camera inward,
Catch the flicker in my eyes.
Not the chin, the waist, the posture
But the self that never lies.
