While most polls are only asking about the remaining major candidates — Mamdani, Sliwa and Cuomo, running as an independent — they are not the only ones on the ballot. Those who dropped out too late, including Eric Adams, will still appear, as Jim Walden found out when he tried to remove his name.

In her first public appearance since the indictment, Ms. James spoke defiantly against the charges, raising her fist in the air before vowing to fight them.

“You come for me, you’ve got to come for all of us, all of us, every single one of us,” she said. “We’re all in this together.”

Monday's rally was billed as Mamdani’s closing argument in the mayoral race, and it captured his improbable journey from unknown state lawmaker to Democratic nominee — buoyed by a grass-roots army of volunteers, and, eventually, by unions and more mainstream Democratic politicians like Tish James.

While this story may feel like an only-in-New York political fairy tale, there are several lessons for understanding America’s changing political landscape.

Here are five takeaways from Astead Herndon's Times magazine profile of Mamdani:

His father’s reply changed his perspective. “I was an Indian in Uganda. I was a Muslim in India. And I was all of these things in New York City,” Mahmood Mamdani explained to his son. And “to be a minority is also to see the truth of the place amidst the promise of it.”

“That exception is one that I believe we should not only take issue with because of what it means for Palestinians and Palestinian human rights,” he said. “But also, whenever you are at peace with the making of an exception, you make it easier to make another exception — wherever, whenever.”

The outsize reactions to Mamdani’s rise are because he may have the temperament — & the public support — to sustain his political coalition past January’s inauguration and make meaningful change to policy and legislation. Stardom is not what’s inherently threatening. Combining it with competence is.

At New York’s West Indian American Day Parade this summer, Hakeem Jeffries, the House minority leader — who has still withheld his endorsement of the nominee — made a pointed distinction between “jerk-chicken Brooklyn” and “Starbucks Brooklyn.” Mamdani moves easily through both.

Most of them were in cages strewed with waste, in a house infested with insects and so full of trash and debris that some areas were impassable, the authorities said.

Mamdani’s meteoric rise to become the front-runner in the NYC mayor’s race was fueled by his promise to make the city more affordable. He has highlighted four signature policy proposals: universal child care, free buses, city-owned grocery stores and a rent freeze on rent-stabilized apartments.
