The photo is composed of a close view of an insect on concrete moving towards the camera. The insect is a colorful beetle with a red, yellow and green iridescent exoskeleton.

I found this beetle upside down struggling to right itself. I helped it turn over and it paused for a few photos. I've never seen a rainbow scarab alive in person and was happy that I checked out the fluttering noise that I heard in my driveway.

This photo shows a landscape in black and white with a foggy scene of a building and trees. The building is obscured by the fog, it is a Georgian style brick building with the central colonnade and three floors of Windows. The columns on the building are framed by an arching tree that bends in ways that perhaps a tree should not. It's a large tree that fills the frame from bottom to top and its lacy branches that are empty of leaves further obscure the building. The tree starts to bend as soon as it branches out from the trunk making it unsettling in how intensely it bends. The thought of the tree breaking or being in motion as a sentient and mobile being come to mind for me.

This mural can be found in the River Arts District of Asheville, North Carolina. I chose it as my monster selection for the day because the animal-human hybrid made me think of a Wererabbit and also of creepy humanoid rabbit references in films like Donnie Darko. The mask-like quality of the image makes you wonder which is the mask, the person or the rabbit? The contrast of the extreme Walken frown and the equally extreme Bugs Bunny smile adds to the striking creep factor of this image.
I looked up the context of Bugs Bunny with Christopher Walken, and there is a connection. Walken has noted in interviews that he has played some of his roles as if he was Bugs Bunny, and that Bugs Bunny was his favorite actor. He's never revealed which roles but some might make educated guesses.

This photo was taken at a restaurant with one of those gas fire tables. It made a line of fire that seemed like a specimen behind glass. Each flame is visible in a base of shiny black stones, and the shapes of the flames undulate freely but with the consistency of a controlled space and fuel source. A added a bit of orange to make the colors feel as warm in the photo as they were in person.

This photo shows a leading off into the distance to a marine radio station building. The very straight road is lined with tall cypress trees whose branches reach over the road to form a tunnel. Though not far from the Bay Area, this is a rather remote area full of nature and wildlife.

I took this photo in 2019 while visiting Newfields in Indianapolis, Indiana. At the time there was a temporary installation of one of Yoyoi Kusama's Infinity rooms. All the Eternal Love that I Have for the Pumpkins was originally made in 2017 and features a mirrored room filled with pumpkins lit up like lamps. The mirrors create an illusion that the pumpkin field goes on for Infinity, and the viewer gets the sand in the middle of it. Much of Kusama's work focuses on her personal struggle with mental illness and art is a tool for her to manage the symptoms that she experiences.

This photograph shows a person who's come through a door into a room filled with pumpkins, and they are holding their phone to take the photograph presented here. The floor ceiling and walls are covered with mirrors, so the pumpkins are reflected into Infinity and fill the composition. The pumpkins are emitting light and are a golden color with black polka dots. Their shape is slightly curved making the pumpkins just a little bit surreal.

I chose this waterfall photo because it feels like the setting for a scary story. The textures are vivid, the landscape is stark, complex, and very organic. The icicles hanging from the cave like cliffs seem almost like teeth in a very large mouth. The exposed tree roots create a sense that the tree is grasping to the landscape and very much alive despite the drabness of the scene.

The scene shows a small central waterfall flowing off a short limestone cliff into a pool of water. Icicles hang from the recessed cliff, and on the left a large tree with exposed roots is perched on top of the cliff. In the background, more trees dominate a tangled landscape without leaves but with plenty of mood.

This photograph shows a close up shot of a very furry dog's eye. In the wavy fur several small snowflakes have been captured.

I took this photo years ago when my dog was walking in the snow. She had remarkable eyes. They were so large that often you could see the whites of her eyes, much like a human. Because of that, her eyes were very expressive and almost human and the way she could convey a message. In this case, I know just by her eyes that she's on the lookout for squirrels, and not people to pet her. That's why I consider this photo to fall into the category of werewolf. She passed away a little more than 2 weeks ago now, and I'm still getting used to not having my friend around. But I'm so thankful to have hundreds of photos that I have taken of her over the years. Part of my grieving processes to occasionally share a photo so that she and my memories of her can be appreciated by others.

This small mushroom was photographed at an extremely low angle to capture a detailed look at the underside of the cap and the grassy environment around it. The sun illuminates the mushroom giving a good view of it's textures and patterns.

The St. Augustine lighthouse is one of the most haunted locations in the United States. Shadow figures have been captured peeking over the balcony landings for people looking up. So that's exactly what I did...no ghosts, but there was vertigo. It is a fun and educational climb to the top as the lighthouse now functions as a museum.

This photo has a vertical format and a horizontal line cuts the composition in half. The bottom half shows a grid of squares that make up the underside of a landing at the first landing of a half spiral staircase that climbs the 164 foot building. The top half of the composition reveals the staircase and the many landings that go all the way to the top.

A flying saucer yard decoration at E-T-Fresh Jerky in Hilo, NV.
This black and white photo captures a fairly large scale (8-ish ft diameter)flying saucer crashed a desert landscape. I chose black and white to give the historical feel of a 1950s Roswell type crash. There are many decorations like this around this beef jerky vendor in the middle of nowhere. Highly recommend the beef jerky!

Inside E-T-FRESH Jerky in Hilo, NV, there are as many as many alien themed props as there are outside. This photograph shows a mechanical model of an alien/ Donald Trump hybrid. It was in a glass case where you could pay money for it to tell your fortune (a la Zoltar.) It was hard to tell if this was a celebratory depiction or a critically humorous depiction, and that was probably intentional.

Highway 375 in Nevada goes past Area 51 and is known as the extraterrestrial highway. They even have official signage which is pictured here. It's a long lonely road with some impressively stark landscapes.

Years ago I took a studio tour at universal studios Hollywood. On the tour was a prop house for their film and television shows. It was perhaps the most fascinating part of the tour. I captured this photo of a model of ET, the extraterrestrial seated on a massive wooden throne that was used in the Vlad the impaler episode of drunk History, and behind those objects on a shelf there are stacks of clear plastic chairs that create an array of abstraction shapes. I use black and white to create unity by limiting the color in this image.

Forgot my alt text! This museum is housed on the grounds of Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul, South Korea. The photo shows impressive double stairs that lead to a Pagoda style building. The sky and the stairs have a light value but the building and the space between the stairs contrast with darkness.

This black and white photograph is taken from a low perspective looking up to the sign of a shop in New Orleans. The sign dominates the bottom half of the composition, in the top half highlights the sun peeking through iron work on one of the many balconies of the French quarter. There are a lot of fun details about this photo. The sign is in the shape of a teacup and advertises psychic readings for the Bottom of the Cup Tea Room. The underneath of the balcony creates a nice rhythm, and the iron work and hanging plants help set a mood.

This black and white photograph shows a spider web that fills most of the frame. It is covered in dew and the dew highlights the individual strands of the web. The web has a singular edge that cuts through the composition at a diagonal and it drapes in a way where it loses focus as it goes back in space towards the background. The draping of the web creates arcs and lines that resemble algebraic equations. The background of the image shows a tree-filled landscape which makes the web pop in the dark spaces and disappear into nothing in the light.

I found this concrete skull a few years ago and has been a staple in my Halloween decorations. I like to take whatever flowers are still blooming in October and put them in the eyes to create a bit more dynamic appearance.
This photograph shows a concrete skull resting on the corner of a concrete wall. The "V" that the wall creates emphasizes the skull and it's toothy grin. The eye sockets of the skull are filled with orange marigold flowers.
