north korea's probably the most absurd fiction-dystopia-but-real state and life's still life there. had a couple north korean refugee buddies and obv there's a reason they escaped but life was still normal-ish much of the time

the authoritarian country I lived in was less gleefully brutal than this, but yes, everyday life was pretty much normal for most people. then someone you know gets disappeared to a concentration camp. but life goes on, even with horrifying shit like that happening

i do not want to be construed with defending hegseth but there have been foreign military installations/detachments based in the US for decades, this is not a new thing. even the specific base they're talking about already has a singapore air force detachment
