Absolutely loved the effects and set pieces. You can really see Barker’s prosaic imagination and I think the storyboarding of the movie is nicely apparent in the filmmaking. Good smatterings of kink and BDSM, and the finale’s properly freaky and nasty. Fun, just a little mangled and hollow.

Clive Barker’s Lord of Illusions (1995) is unfortunately just Okay™️, a frustrating tease and dangling of a much better movie that’s nevertheless chock full of treats and goopies. Not exactly good, but gross and sexy in the all the right spots. I think Clive had a killer Hellblazer movie in him.

Like some of the other wuxia wireflights jammed into Brigitte Lin’s relay race to retirement, Fire Dragon (1994) pales in comparison to the Swordsman trilogy but still holds its own as a wildfire justification to the sorcery of the moving image, dark magic insanity. Absolutely fucking breathless

With choreography so swift it slips between frames and violent pyrotechnics that HAVE to have been a maelstrom of near-disaster stunts we probably don’t want to think too deeply about, it’s hard to argue against this as some of the best of Hong Kong’s fantasy fight and flight. Pure overstimulation.

Brigitte is God herself, as always, one of our best and brightest. And even outside of the (fucking terrifying) fire trickery, the fighting and staging is smart as hell and as golden (and crazy!) as you could possibly want. Just terrific stuff from director Yuen Woo-ping. I hope everyone was okay 😂

Ugh, ALMOST perfect. The road to get to the incredible final third doesn’t quite congeal the way I wanted it to, but it’s jammed with pretty miraculous imagery and a genuinely immense atmosphere of fantasy (and coming of age melancholy) so thick you could carve it.

The coarse conflict of adolescent anger and parental strife rattles more than it harmonizes, but the movie (perhaps fittingly) is a really gorgeous sketchbook. Some sequences and shots are so spellbinding I felt swept off my feet.
