These kinds of tender responses reveal the emotional depth we share with chimpanzees.

As we mourn the loss of Dr. Jane, we're reminded of what she taught us: Animals have distinct minds and emotions, compassion extends beyond our own species, and each of us has a role to play in advancing her work.

Researchers have seen chimpanzees sit near the body of the loved one they lost, touching or grooming them for the last time.

Some chimpanzees won't eat and become unusually withdrawn.

Companions may linger nearby, offering comfort through touch or simply by staying with them.

Grieving is universal – it's not unique to humans. In fact, Dr. Jane was one of the first to document mourning in wild chimpanzees.

Her observations transformed how the world understood animals – she showed they also experience connection, love, and loss.

Let's keep working together to advance her mission – because, as Dr. Jane said:

"Don't give up. There is a future for you. Do your best while you're still on this beautiful Planet Earth."

Thank you.

As we celebrate Thanksgiving this long weekend, we want you to know how grateful we are for you.

Your support over the past two weeks has meant the world to us. You are what kept Dr. Jane going – and you are what keeps our team going.

To find out how you can support chimpanzees like Wounda, and to advance Dr. Jane's mission, go to JaneGoodall.ca.

Note: Dr. Jane and the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada do not endorse the handling of, or close proximity to, wildlife. This represents a sanctuary context with trained professionals.

What happened next could never have been predicted. When she was released, she turned around and showed the team – and Dr. Jane – just how thankful she was.

"It was a very, very touching moment. One of the most amazing things that's ever happened to me,” Dr. Jane said.

As people across the country celebrate Thanksgiving this weekend, we thought we would share this moment from the archives.

This video shows the moment that Wounda, one of the rescued chimpanzees at the Jane Goodall Institute's Tchimpounga sanctuary, was released onto Tchindzoulou Island.

She did her part. And now it's on us to do our part.

At the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada, we're carrying forward her hard work.

With your support, we'll advance her mission and build the world she envisioned – where animals, people, and the environment can thrive together.

Last year, our team sat down with Dr. Jane and spoke about the impact she has had.

Was she proud? "I actually feel quite bewildered, surprised."

But she felt that was her task: "After 90 years of living on this planet, that obviously my task was to give people hope when all seems hopeless."
janegoodallcan.bsky.social
As we carry forth her mission, we are guided by the wisdom she leaves behind:

"Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference."

Join us as we remember Dr. Jane at JaneGoodall.ca/RememberingJane.

Dr. Jane often said that youth, and the power they had, were her greatest reason for hope.

She was scheduled to speak about Roots & Shoots at an elementary school on October 1st, the morning after she passed in her sleep.

Her passion for our world never wavered.

Dr. Jane spent her final weeks doing what she loved most.

She advocated for the environment and shared her hopeful message in Toronto, Ottawa, Detroit, Austin, New York, Mexico City, Los Angeles, and Chicago.

We've heard from many people who are interested in attending memorials in the United Kingdom or the United States – but Dr. Jane's wishes were that people honour her locally.

We're planning an official memorial event, which the public can attend in person and online.

"This is me. This is Jane."

As we look back on what Dr. Jane accomplished, let's also look forward – and let's see how we can advance the mission she started. Because the Jane Goodall Institute and its chapters are bigger than any one person.

Now, groups are active around the world – in 75 countries and counting! – and more than 14,000 young leaders are actively engaged in projects in Canada.

Dr. Jane was proud of that, but she knew more could be done. She knew more needed to be done. So let's do more.

Dr. Jane could not have been more clear when she spoke about youth – and the hope they gave her. She knew they had the energy, talent, and passion needed to change the world.

Decades ago, to do just that, she and twelve young people started Roots & Shoots in Tanzania.

No action is too small. What matters most is carrying forward Dr. Jane's mission of protecting the planet and inspiring others to do the same.

We are committed to continuing her hard work – and to creating a world where animals, people, and the environment can all thrive.
