Originally it was 'in a German bookshop,' but that was too much, so I cut the second 'German' but now of course I realise I should have cut the second half entirely. Ah well, never go back, etc.

I see pieces like this a lot, often w/ a spin of lamenting cultural degeneration, but reading is a LABOR issue, it’s declined because so many people are working overtime or two jobs & employers expect after hours work. France has Earth’s highest reading rate b/c long lunch breaks & labor protections

When I see a book I really hate in a charity shop, I sometimes consider buying it and immediately binning it so they get the money but no-one else has suffer, although I've not actually been mad enough to do this yet.

My much-missed friend Richard Preddy realised he was aphantasic about the same time and me and it was really interesting comparing notes (for us if not anyone else). We both really liked the rhythm of dialogue and people getting words very slightly wrong, for one thing.
