All that without even mentioning how tricky to work oil is, and expensive.

I've done acrylic just enough to figure out I need my photoshops. I'm just not talented enough to paint on canvas.

We still do this, with 3d software, but usually people will not model a whole-ass dinosaur head just so they can figure out if it works in the composition before they put in weeks to paint it in oil. They'll import one instead.

It's kinda wild just how difficult making paintings used to be. I had a book once of James Gurdney's that showed he would outright make models in cardboard and clay of an entire city just for a painting of his.
