i think the only way for atproto to succeed is for us to show what apps can do when every app sees every other app's public data, and they share an identity system. no technical or sociological argument is as convincing as seeing seamless interop and the lighthearted competitive landscape it unlocks

One of the tragedies of the Aralqum is how cool it looks in photos…
I’m standing in the Aralqum, which was a sea within living memory.
While traveling in Central Asia we rode in various Chinese electric cars (BYD is trouble for Tesla) and drunk speciality coffee made with beans grown in Yunnan province. A very different sense of what’s happening in China vs the “cheap shit from AliExpress” stereotype held in Europe and the US…
I wonder how Richard Serra would feel if he knew that his sculptures would eventually exist solely as selfie backdrops 🤔

We are alarmed by reports that Germany is on the verge of a catastrophic about-face, reversing its longstanding and principled opposition to the EU’s Chat Control proposal which, if passed, could spell the end of the right to privacy in Europe. signal.org/blog/pdfs/ge...

Extant decentralized solutions (Mastodon, etc.) demonstrate that the kinds of social problems that decentralized networks are supposed to resolve simply emerge in different forms due to the properties of the networks in question.

Decentralization isn't a bad thing, it's just not the silver bullet.

I'm not a global, or even local politics expert. But when I figured out how to map GPS jamming a few years ago my eyes were opened to the scale of Russian hybrid warfare against the west. Usually with limited awareness or response by western governments. And it's only gotten worse since then. 1/
We made a pilgrimage to the Aral Desert, which was still the world’s fourth largest inland sea in 1970. They say the future is here but unevenly distributed, and this is the best proxy I’ve seen for the future we are currently making.
