A young black man with a hoodie offered me a seat at Victoria Station, Manchester today. It was genuine, not patronizing or ironic. My faith in human nature has been restored. Some people, however, are decent. Some aren't.

Addictive substances have certain qualities: Speed of effect, withdrawal symptoms, reliability (ie, it works every time)continued use despite knowledge of harmful effects. Nicotine, in particular when smoked, ticks all these boxes.

There were similarly potty ideas from Britain's Home Guard, but not quite as well formed as this. Roller skating troops was a concept that was not discounted.

We have too many Trump supporters in the UK. We have had liar Boris Johnson, but it is only a matter of time before people allied to him get voted in again.I feel for people like you, decent Americans, who have to watch a maniac take control of their country. Take care mate

I dare say the scenario you describe conjures up rudeness, but when people are crammed together,in a tediously boring situation, it is inevitable that fellow passengers will take a peek at what their neighbour is doing.
