The musical went on to win two Tony Awards (Best Actress in a Musical for Block, and Best Costume Design of a Musical for Mackie). Closing after 330 Broadway performances, the show found new life through successful UK and US tours.

Stephanie J. Block is phenomenal as the lead Cher (the Star), Bob Mackie's costumes are magical, and the music selected from Cher's career is wonderfully arranged for the stage.

…it covers major events throughout her career, including the early years with Sonny, 70s TV success, marriage to Greg Allman, career comebacks, &success as a dance diva. Cher has such a robust story, the book struggles to capture the breadth of her career; it is overstuffed, but you never get bored.

Cher ended 2018 with the opening of her biographical musical, The Cher Show, on Broadway in December. I was lucky enough to see the show that month. Told from the perspective of three actresses playing Cher from different eras (the Star, the Lady, and the Babe)…

For real! It’s definitely a goal of mine to see as many of them live as possible.

So, many thanks to Diane Keaton; may she and her work be remembered with love. 💙

For Men and Music, I wrote this poem, “I’m into Pop Music,” as a tribute to Diane Keaton (and my other comfort/inspiration during that time, Carole King) because I admired Diane’s independence. It was a self reliance I aspired to; I think I found my path a bit easier because of the model she set.

I was soothed by Diane’s eccentric mix of humor and beauty, kookiness and intelligence. Though thought of as a woman who could not finish a sentence, she was actually clear-minded; her distinct style and three contemplative memoirs can attest to that. She had vision.

Diane’s movies were a comfort during this time; I played them over and over again—especially Something’s Gotta Give. When I think of her, I most often think of the remarkable, funny, and touching performance she gives in that movie.

I’m very sad to hear about Diane Keaton’s passing. She was such an inspiration to me, especially during my 20s. When I was writing my first book, Men and Music, I was living alone and single, really struggling with what I was supposed to do with my life.

New poem—wishing everyone lots of love this autumn. 🍎💙
A poem by Isaiah Vianese with the following text:

Apple

It’s autumn.
I’ve been so sad this year.

The sky greys.
The news turns red.

Like I said,
I love you to the end.

The album also launched another lucrative concert outing, winkingly called the Here We Go Again Tour. Cher was at the top of her game, and there was another big win to come later that year.
