An approach to engaging project-affected people that is rooted in respect for their dignity, knowledge and capabilities to make their own development choices, is actually not such a radical proposition. It just means giving effect to commitments many institutions and companies already make.

60+ rights groups have endorsed the proposal, which provides a framework for shifting from the prevailing paradigm that accepts forced displacement of communities “in the way of development," to a truly rights-based approach to community participation in decision-making that affects their lives.
