I used to be 100% color, and these days I find that when I shoot color, I often wished that I'd shot B+W instead. It's an odd preference shift. (Except for Provia/Velvia. I never regret shooting that.)

Private Road

A black and white photograph of a dusty dirt road leading through an open gate marked with a “Private Property” sign. The road cuts between rough vegetation and rocky ground, leading toward a stand of trees in the distance under a bright, cloud-filled sky. The deep tonal range of the image emphasizes the texture of the dirt, the weathered wood of the gateposts, and the dramatic contrast between the luminous clouds and darkened sky—an effect enhanced by the infrared sensitivity of Ilford SFX 200 film. Captured on a Voigtländer Perkeo II with an 80mm f/3.5 Color-Skopar lens and developed in Ilford DD, the photograph exudes a timeless, high-contrast Western atmosphere. And I hope that if you had the misfortune to read that, you brought your Dramamine.

A striking black and white photograph of an open desert landscape beneath towering cumulus clouds. Rolling hills rise from the flat plain, their contours emphasized by strong sunlight and deep shadows. In the foreground, a stop sign and directional road signs stand at a quiet intersection, hinting at human presence amid the vast emptiness. The darkened sky, rendered nearly black, contrasts powerfully with the glowing white clouds—an effect characteristic of Ilford SFX 200 film when paired with a red filter. Captured using a Voigtländer Perkeo II with an 80mm f/3.5 Color-Skopar lens and developed in Ilford DD, the image exhibits crisp tonality and dramatic infrared-style contrast. And yes, this blurb is insufferable, but you wanted an alt tag, didn't you?

Not unless it contains silver halides. Exposure control might also be challenging.

A black and white landscape photograph of rugged mountains capped with lingering snow under a dramatic, dark clouded sky. The foreground features a patchwork of shrubs, grasses, and a sparse stand of trees, some bare, with a wooden fence visible near the bottom edge of the frame. The contrast between the luminous mountain slopes and the heavy, brooding sky emphasizes the tension of an approaching storm. A dramatic black and white photograph of a mountain town street leading toward towering peaks partially dusted with snow. Dark, textured storm clouds gather overhead, contrasting sharply with the bright mountains illuminated by sunlight breaking through the clouds. Buildings with balconies and windows line both sides of the street, creating a sense of depth that draws the viewer’s eye toward the distant landscape. Captured on Ilford SFX 200 film with a Voigtländer Perkeo II and 80mm f/3.5 Color-Skopar lens.

I'd like to have a version of Aviphot 200 in 4x5 that didn't have the consistency of tissue paper. (And K200 would be lovely. Just sayin'.)
incidencematrix.bsky.social
In/near Telluride, CO. I don't have the exact coordinates, but it's from a set I took in that area. (I suppose that a few were taken on the way, but I'm pretty certain that one is close by.) I have two sets I took on two trips last year, that are just now surfacing....
incidencematrix.bsky.social
Sooner or later, you will feel the call.
incidencematrix.bsky.social
However, others have different preferences. (Your working temperature, format, etc. can matter too, as does how much you shoot.) So it pays to think about your needs.
incidencematrix.bsky.social
...but it does depend. If I need fine detail (especially in 35mm), or am shooting with something like TMZ that has a lot of grain, I reach for the XTOL. I find that T-Max gives me strong results on Aviphot (which I use a lot), and of course Rodinal does Rodinal things. HC-110 is a great backup.
incidencematrix.bsky.social
These days, I have been using (cloned) T-Max, XTOL, Rodinal, and occasionally HC-110. They all have their strengths, and get results that I like with particular emulsions or in particular circumstances. I tend to lean to getting more contrast in the negative, and acutance over smoothness.
incidencematrix.bsky.social
Well, you want to pick developers based on what they do, how they interact with your film/process, and what your needs are. Do you need smoothness? Acutance? Speed? Highlight control? Shorter/longer dev times? Long storage viability? Easy handling? Low cost? Different tradeoffs.

Obviously, this one was obligatory....
