Thank you again to Leila Weah, Kenzie and all who participated in the Teta’s Trek fundraising walk in Minneapolis.

Their efforts raised over $3,400 which will go directly towards supporting journalists in Gaza through IMS’ partner Filastiniyat.

Furthermore, IMS’ local partner, Afghan Journalists Safety Committee, has been advising journalists on how to stay safe while reporting from the affected areas.
Independent Afghan journalists are reporting from the affected areas to give accurate information to the rest of the country and the world about the devastation and how bad roads and insufficient emergency health resources are making it difficult to carry out relief operations.
IMS’ local partners are on the ground in all four provinces and are acting as a bridge between the public who need assistance and the international aid organisations and the de facto authorities who can provide that assistance. They, thus, play a crucial role in saving lives.
Other reports suggest that the number of injured is at least 850. The death toll is expected to rise as more victims are pulled from the rubble.
An earthquake of 6.3-magnitude struck on Monday at around 1 a.m. local time, destroying both homes and infrastructure in Samangan, Balkh, Baghlan and Kunduz provinces. According to the de facto authorities, at least 27 people were killed and more than 300 injured.
Two months after an earthquake hit Afghanistan’s eastern regions, another earthquake has struck its northern provinces. The tragedy has brought to the forefront how local media provides lifesaving information during disasters.

FAMA Films also connects the youth with other youth they have trained previously and their networks, so that the youth can continue to give their community a voice and collaborate across rural and urban settings.
After their training, the youth get to keep the equipment, thereby increasing their chances of earning an income as mobile journalists.
But the mojo stories help host communities and IDPs better communicate about problems and good local solutions. Furthermore, the mojo videos are shared with humanitarian actors to provide them with insights into IDP and host communities’ needs and perspectives.
Since the youth are part of the internally displaced community, they are able to tell stories that promote social cohesion and reduce disputes, especially between the IDPs and the communities which are hosting them. With host villages and towns having very limited resources, tensions can arise.
They teach both technical aspects – using equipment such as mobile phones, tripods, microphones – and journalistic aspects – such as what makes a good story, how to spot erroneous rumours and fake news, and how to conduct good interviews.
All IDPs have an important story to tell. That’s why FAMA Films has been training young women and men in mobile journalism (mojo).
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) states on their website that up to 2.1 million people have been internally displaced and/or are returning from forced displacement within the country at the end of 2024.
Burkina Faso is struggling with terrorist attacks and armed conflict, which have resulted in many Burkinabe being internally displaced.
For the past six years, IMS’ media partner FAMA Films has been training internally displaced youth in Burkina Faso to tell the stories of the local communities where they live now.

We all owe the awardees and their colleagues around the world our deepest respect and gratitude for their fearless commitment to exposing what those in power seek to hide.
The awards are a message of solidarity with all journalists and media workers bent on exposing wrongdoings of all kinds. And it is loud and clear appeal for ensuring more direct assistance to those working in peril to do so.
Two of the seven recipients of the World Press Freedom Hero award – Ukrainian journalist Victoria Roshchyna and Palestinian journalist Mariam Abu Daqqa – paid with their lives. Two others – Georgia’s Mzia Amaglobeli and Hong Kong’s Jimmy Lai – are currently in prison.
Last night, IMS director Jesper Højberg was honoured to present the joint IMS-IPI World Press Freedom Hero award and the Free Media Pioneer Award to a group of exceptional journalists, editors and media outlets.
While there is nominally a ceasefire in place, the needs of Gaza’s journalists are still massive, from safety equipment to workspaces with electricity to basics like clean water and food. Money raised by Teta’s Trek will go directly to our partner in Gaza, Filastiniyat, to support journalists.
We’re so honoured when local groups organise to support IMS and our partners.

This Sunday, Teta’s Trek will take place in Minneapolis, MN, a fundraising walk to raise money for IMS’ partners in Gaza.

Scan the QR code to support Teta’s Trek or if you’re in the Minneapolis area, to join their walk.
