The artwork shows a ceremony on a patio. There's a round pool in the center of the image and a round arch in the background. Sisters of the convent are placed in different locations performing different parts of the ritual. Half of them wear a peacock mask and half of them wear sun-like headpieces. There's a woman in the center on the horse. She wears a blue dress decorated with mosaic-like patterns. The horse is covered with blue patterns and stands still above the water. Two twins are sitting on the floor surrounded by large lilies. Behind them one sister plays a harp and another one is holding two bowls with mysterious light. There's a big mosaic tree in the background with other sisters dancing around it. There are two other sisters on top of the wall waving scarves. The artwork is mostly blue and light green The image shows a room with tall windows and stairs leading to a bathroom below. There's a woman with red hair reaching towards a dollhouse. The woman is an original character of the commissioner. On the right side from the window there's a wall with decorated arch around it and some paintings hanging on the wall. On the first level there's a bathtub with a man laying in it. The bathtub is partially covered by a divider. The artwork is mostly pink and mint with lots of patterns. The artwork shows musicians sitting in shallow water in a purple room. First musician plays wooden drums, second one plays erhu, third one plays a flute, fourth one plays a gong. All background musicians wear either pots or plates on their heads. The woman in the center has black hair and plays an instrument inspired by Korean instrument called gayageum. There are three purple goldfish floating above the ground. The wall in the background is decorated with arches with stained glass and there's a big flower pot with purple cornflowers. The room also has some arches with silk fabric hanging on them. The artwork is purple with some green details. the artwork shows a room with a circle-shaped window and two people standing in the center. The window is decorated with flowers and has a curtain hanging over it. The room has two floors and stairs between them. The bottom part has a pool with the reflection of the room and two separated stairs facing each other. The room is decorated with patterns and tiles. The artwork is mostly lilac and turquoise.

Self-portrait of the artist screaming. They are a white person with shoulder-length brown hair. They've got one hand around their neck. The background is red and black. Around the top and bottom are white thorns curling around each other. Drawing of Florence Welch. She is a white woman with long, red hair. She is pictured from the thigh up, looking up, her arms out, hands with their palms up. She is wearing a see-through, sparkly dress with long sleeves. Illustration of a brown-skinned man with short, dark curly hair. He is wearing a black outfit with gold embellishments. He is drawn in profile and has a neutral expression. With his right hand he is holding a white mouse by the tail, dangling it above his outstretched left hand. Behind the mouse is a golden halo. White whisps of smoke are coming from the halo, stretching across the right side of the drawing. The background is teal with decorative pillars. Sketchbook page with a turnip, a fish, some eyes and the lyrics "I listen to music from 2006 and feel kind of sick" drawn in it.

How often do we hear perspectives like Giel's in Britain's mainstream press? 🤔
bylinetimes.bsky.social
Giel, an asylum seeker who fled the South Sudanese Civil War, shared his story with us last night.

"When that conflict happened, it happened as a political misunderstanding. It's just like what's going on right now in the UK."

Breakfast TV tells me Tony Hadley and Tony Christie are doing a new cover of Avenues and Alleyways.

Me: "That's the theme tune to something...."

I don't so much remember character names as the opening letter, the shape of the word and an indistinct mental sound glyph that goes with it.

I have new book inertia. At the start of a book I'd rather be doing almost anything else.

By the end of a book I have book momentum. It is hard to stop.

It's new book day! The Lychford Collection, containing the first three books, is in all good bookstores, physical and digital, now! (And I'll have copies at @thoughtbubbleuk.bsky.social !)
Cover of The Lychford Collection.

I'm currently getting through a book every 2 or 3 weeks which is *so* much better than the last few years. Mainly by only reading things where the first page grabs me. But even so I feel intense reluctance whenever starting a book that I have to push past.

I never learn tv character names either. It's just "that tall person" and "that shorter blond person". See also: real life.

Opening credits include the incredibly inelegant line: "From now on, like your parents were, you are the secret force of Pole Position". Honestly it bothered me every time I heard it.

Yeah I just have a fuzzy placeholder for their appearance most of the time. Details appear and disappear as required by the text!

Taking on Elon Musk should be an open goal in British politics.

Love that! (Also big Target Doctor Who vibes from the image with the little quote underneath.)

All literary novels should have little b+w illustrations every few pages to remind you what the characters look like.

TV THAT TIME FORGOT: Defenders Of The Earth (King Features/Marvel, 1986)

Newspaper strip-derived Flash Gordon, Mandrake The Magician, The Phantom and Lothar - who was, crucially, 'armed with his powers' - team up to, well, defend the Earth, invarrably from Ming The Merciless.

Share a cartoon from the past that kids today probably never heard of.
Pole Position: A group of cartoon characters including a woman with big black hair and neckerchief, a cure girl withnred hair in bunches, a dude driving a hi tech car in a helmet, and some kind of weird grey marsupial.

Some books are more frictionless than others. But every time the pov changes that is new friction to overcome.
