"I've never played a good game where the developers put a big icon of the button you're supposed to press onscreen ... look at Heavenly Sword and it seems really half-assed, asking you to do all these button-timing sequences but not getting much payoff from it."

James Bond's government commando ninjas were a big part of the western ninja boom, a lot of Japanese ninja experts will bring that up and how colorful swordsman fireball toad Kabuki ninja didn't go west (pre-Naruto), so Itagaki speaks of that context.

I've seen other Japanese say the same.

Thanks for the kind words. They brought me back 20 years in the past, when I first began to give my life over to DOA, and I’ve been on the go constantly from then til now. The reason why someone like ...

"all the money went to videogames was because of the cool graphics and the sound. So for people who are partially 'responsible' to have destroyed the other game industries, for anyone to say that visual is not as important as game concept, is ridiculous..."

Itagaki: If you're talking about the playability, of course I think DOA is one of the fairest games you can play. It's so fair that I don't mind putting in my own money to play. But to go back to the point that I made earlier, as a videogame designer, having the graphics through the TV set and sound, you can't separate that from so-called game concept, or playability or whatever, because the graphics beauty is the reason why you turn on your game and play.

Some developers focus too much on improving the system, expanding the features as far as the system goes. Well if they're going to do that, why not make the game look and sound better, because that's what people will look at and, you know, feel. Of course, I have played all types of games, not just videogames - every type of game out there. And for some sorts of games, their industries or the businesses were destroyed because all of the money was rerouted to videogames. People started spending money on videogames, and consequently lost interest in other types of non-videogame games.

Well the reason why all the money went to videogames was because of the cool graphics and the sound. So for people who are partially 'responsible' to have destroyed the other game industries, for anyone to say that visual is not as important as game concept, is ridiculous. If you focus just on game concept there's no way you could compete with other non-video games. Make sense?
“No, I was so busy with mahjong every day that it took me seven years to graduate. I’m sure we were there at the same time. In fact, I remember seeing you during our university days. You were the captain of the yacht racing team, weren’t you?”

Itagaki: It's hard to understand if you're not Japanese maybe, but there are different types of ninja, my concept is not so stealth... I think most kids dream of becoming a ninja not thinking of hiding they're thinking that the battle scenes are cool and the way the hold the katana is cool
Kikizo: How accurately would you say the art of ninja is portrayed in Ninja Gaiden, and for that matter, other ninja themed games that are around at the moment?

Itagaki: It's hard to understand if you're not Japanese maybe, but there are different types of ninja and my concept of ninja is not so stealth; a ninja is supposed to be hidden, and not seen by others, to hide and kill - like a secret assassin, but my concept is more open, I just want to kill everyone who gets in my way! I think most kids dream of becoming a ninja of course, but they're not thinking of hiding and stuff, they're thinking that the battle scenes are cool and the way the hold the katana is cool - so I wanted to emphasise that aspect more.
I: The difficulty was described in Edge as a design flaw

Itagaki: It was done intentionally of course. The testers who tested this game went nuts. At first it was easier but when the testers said "this is too difficult" I made it even more difficult [everyone lols]

"Tekken 1 good T2 better, T3 even better than that. My family are big fans of Tekken 3! Tekken 4 just did not push the genre at all... respect Virtua Fighter 4a fan of simplification... they tried to increase the mass appeal of the game by cutting out one button. But DOA 3 is still a better game."
"Tomonobu Itagaki: Actually, wasn't Bill Gates practicing hard to be able to play DOA3 gracefully in front of groups of people? On an unrelated note, I would actually like to go up against Bill Gates once; not in a fighting game, but in backgammon."
"Tekken puts in all of these half-finished "features", then they take them right out again. Tag fights, elevation differences, walls... Any of those things would have become a bonafide feature if they took the time to do it right (laughs)"

Tomonobu Itagaki: I just want to say that people who really want to know about videogames should avail themselves to master a traditional game like Chess or Backgammon, find one and master it. In particular Backgammon is a good choice. The way it's played is a good example of having simplicity and a lot of depth. I've never seen anything in the videogame domain that had better playability than that.

1UP: Tetris?

TI: No. The only reason that videogames have become the more popular medium is because it's interactive visual and audio and it's easier to do by yourself. But people who really want to know the essence of gaming, in all its forms, should definitely master a traditional game. There are plenty of games within the realm of gaming that are deeper than videogames. So it's kind of pointless to debate playability in videogames without first learning the basics in that regard.

You know there are people out there who say "Graphics aren't important!" That's ridiculous. It's the whole point. And that's why the games that we make are incredible visually, and we always try to make the playability as good as we can, because that's the whole reason for the existence of videogames.

1UP: Or else we'd all be playing Backgammon.

TI: [Laughs] YES! OK, now back to the main event.

even if it means being reduced to the level of a dog; people who are not afraid to shame themselves to accomplish their goals... Anyone who can think like that can still be a real man. The Ninja Dog difficulty setting is for men like that. So don't give up too easily!
web.archive.org/web/20051101...
1UP: Sounds tough. It'll be fun to give that one a shot. Is the other new difficulty setting Easy Mode?

TI: No, that's not quite right. The lowest difficulty will be called Ninja Dog. While it is a mode intended for casual gamers, it is not Easy Mode. Not being able to beat the game on Normal means that you are a failure as a Ninja, but not that you are a failure as a gamer, right? Ninja Dog is for those players.

1UP: How does that affect your ranking at the end of each stage? Can you get a Master Ninja ranking in Ninja Dog mode?

TI: [laughs] That's nonsense. Impossible. How could a dog become a Master Ninja?

1UP: You know, when we reviewed the game, we warned people "This is hard,"1 but everyone on message boards scoffed. But when everyone finally got the game the reaction was "OMG." Did you guys think "Well maybe the average gamer isn't as good as we thought, so let's make it easy on them?"

TI: That's right. In other words, there are some people who want to beat the game, even if it means being reduced to the level of a dog; people who are not afraid to shame themselves to accomplish their goals. Sometimes in life, that type of style is necessary. Anyone who can think like that can still be a real man. The Ninja Dog difficulty setting is for men like that. So don't give up too easily!
In Japan there is a saying "kachoufuugetsu" which is "flowers, birds, wind, and the moon." That basically is a vague summary of things that human beings might find appealing. You look at a flower and say, "Oh, this is beautiful." You look at a bird that can fly
