oh yeah im not like its an affront to democracy or whatever (and i do think he will beat her, and if he doesnt she's still capable of beating collins and would be not terrible as a senator) i just refuse to believe her heart is in this

I still honestly have no idea why mills even wants it
himdogson.bsky.social
Ok I’m still locked in for him but admiring Josh hawley is the first actual red flag I’ve seen (also what do you admire about Brian schatz when he’s schumer’s appointed heir and you’re so against Schumer)

Russia against napoleon is absolute peak Lieven is one of my favorite historians ever
himdogson.bsky.social
I actually disagree that the ussr was really a Russian imperialist project tbh, I think that’s broadly letting Marxism-Leninism off the hook for all the Soviet atrocities that were the logical conclusion of that ideology
himdogson.bsky.social
Very similar dynamic to Russians cheering Yeltsin’s destruction of the ussr

I think that in general it makes sense that people wouldn’t be talking about what Dems will do when back in power yet- I’d wait for the primary before forming any real judgements on those issues

now honestly what is scary is the right turning on israel bc the right being pro-israel was pretty much the only thing keeping them from full on nazism, but no i do not think that the mainstream center-left turning on israel means antisemitism becoming mainstream on the center-left in any way
himdogson.bsky.social
i mean look, does the left have an issue with antisemitism? obviously. but when you look at polls saying that 70% of mainstream democrats now sympathize more with palestine i think the vast majority of those people are not in any capacity antisemitic
himdogson.bsky.social
i dont know, im obviously wary of saying that twitter/tiktok isnt real life but basically everyone ive talked to irl who's anti-israel (including my very jewish grandmother who loved it and is heartbroken by what they have done) does not want anyone to 'go back to poland' and is against hamas
himdogson.bsky.social
the article itself says the mom and daughter are long gone and his name is redacted
himdogson.bsky.social
Yeah and your source does absolutely nothing to show that an unconsolidated regime will gain low political engagement when people are impoverished as a direct result of its policies (while all public opinion data for this case shows opposition building due to a worsening economy)
himdogson.bsky.social
Well this seems to be about political participation of the poor in stable democracies which is a completely different issue to whether a poor economy helps regime consolidation
himdogson.bsky.social
In the real world the worsening economy is clearly negatively impacting perceptions of the government
himdogson.bsky.social
I would have to see the paper but that sounds like the kind of political science that’s essentially bunk, I think different countries have different circumstances and you can’t compare a crash before a regime has consolidated to one after
himdogson.bsky.social
I’m not I’m just saying probably wouldn’t have been able to bulldoze your way out of the media making it a thing
himdogson.bsky.social
i get why you want it to happen but your concerns really obviously shouldnt be informing the decisionmaking process of the us opposition
himdogson.bsky.social
oh youre canadian, ok i mean i get why you want what you want but its very obviously not what's actually best for the prospects of american democracy, and for you it has only possible upsides and no downsides because you will not have to live under the possible failed state
himdogson.bsky.social
I think you're wrong about most of that. economic precarity will clearly result in more opposition (this has been the case so far) and will also hurt their consolidation of the military/security services/private sector
himdogson.bsky.social
in all seriousness i really think that could have worked if it had just been about the speaker but he did wish death on kids too (which is obviously much less of a moral infraction than being a republican, but still kind of hard to handwave)
himdogson.bsky.social
I think the situation is the exact opposite- the longer things go on the lower their legitimacy gets. doctrine has to be political trench warfare, not political kantai kessen
himdogson.bsky.social
And my point is that crossing it in response to the Governor defying the Feds, as opposed to the current situation under which they might be crossing it, would be good for them
himdogson.bsky.social
Yes but they would be much more ready to cross it if it was invoked in response to a governor defying the feds
himdogson.bsky.social
the amount of negative polarization nakedly on display wrt the platner vs mills primary is pretty embarrassing
