However, the Wizard being a conman who caused a coup d'état did not sit well with readers so the witch Mombi was reassigned as the person responsible for the Royal Family of Oz’s deposement. The Wizard was recast as a hapless man who was at the right place and right time.

Baum’s own treatment of the Wizard character was disjunctive; Baum originally wrote the Wizard as power hungry and usurped the throne from the rightful king, Pastoria, and hid away the king's only daughter Ozma with the old witch Mombi, to ensure that there would be no heir to the throne.
