Yeah I've never used AUR. Not knowing what people are uploading without reading the code... and I don't have time for that lmao
Sweet. Thanks for validating these for me.
Yeah I figured. My 1st thought was Libreoffice. I'm sure there's no shortage of options.
I assumed so since it's widely used and not an obscure app. Thanks for the verification
I update every time I use the PC. I don't check their homepage or mailing lists. Maybe I should knock on wood, but I've only had one issue that a quick Google search led me to a fix on their user forum. It was the Nvidia kernel issue.
Yeah probably start him with bazzite to see how he handles that. And then branch out later if needed.
Yeah he said gaming and Journaling (libreoffice was my 1st thought). I'm hoping Libre pretty stable.
I think 6 ish months. But stable for me doesn't give me the urge to start a 13 year old boy on arch based systems. Bazzite is leading suggestion in the comments, but pop_OS being Debian based gives me familiarity. But also an excuse to play with immutable so 🤷‍♂️ lol
I thought it was fedora based, but have never used immutable. So I figured DNF/YUM would still work. But using flatpak makes sense. I'm familiar with it at a high level, but not at a user level.
Yeah definitely would be several litmus tests before I'd throw any more "difficult" ditro on it for him. Vanilla Arch has been remarkably stable for me, but I'm a pretty basic user. But need to figure out a good starting point for him.
I'm assuming there's still a package manager, but libreoffice only available via flatpak? I've only messed with Debian and arch. Used to do a little with RHEL at a previous job, but not the same lol. That was server support and not gaming lol
Sweet. Thanks for the recommendation!
Or do I set him up with a gaming distro? I'm thinking bazzite since it's immutable, but have never messed with it personally. Maybe Pop_OS? Probably move him to cachyOS later on? Just not familiar with gaming and want him to be successful from the start. Thoughts?
Ok, my nephew is wanting a PC, so I'm going to set him up with Linux. He wants to game (steam) and use office. I'm familiar with libreoffice, but don't game. I want this to be as easy of an on-boarding as possible. Do I just give him mint and install steam manually?

Cont'd
I can't figure out why forums are dying 🤔
Yeah think that's right. Not in a place to boot and confirm

Next-gen power for your ideas

Surface Pro 3 uses the 4th generation Intel® Core™ processor (i3, i5 or i7). Choose from one of the following:

64GB or 128GB storage with 4GB RAM

256GB or 512GB storage with 8GB RAM
Ah I think mines an i5 w/ 4gb? About to go look now.
Maybe because it's a pro, or the fact we don't do any heavy lifting with it, but seems peppy enough. My daughter just uses it for a web browser
What distro did you use? I recently read that someone just loaded Manjaro (I think), and they needed the surface kernel. So maybe just arch based distros need it? No clue honestly. Just speculating
I bought a surface pro 3 with Ubuntu preloaded on it and it works flawlessly. He said he didn't even need the surface kernel from github.
