Look for these Hawaiian poppies in the lava fields around our partner national parks on Hawaiʻi Island. They seem able to grow right out of the hot, unforgiving ground!

Another find in Kīpuka Pu‘u Huluhulu Native Tree Sanctuary, this is a native Hawaiian poppy, Pua Kala (Argemone glauca -Var. decipiens), which is unusual for a Hawaiian endemic in that it is SPIKY. Now-extinct geese may have been responsible, I'll look into it. :) #plants #flowers #botany #hawaii

Quick, curious, clever — the ʻelepaio flits through branches catching insects. Hawaiian canoe builders saw this bird as a guardian spirit of the forest. ʻElepaio can still be seen in the forests of most #HawaiianIslands.

Haleakalā National Park remains open, but most staff are furloughed, leaving facilities limited. Two visitor centers remain open with the help of the Hawai'i Pacific Parks Association. Summit VC is closed."

The park gates are open. There is VERY limited park staff however, including those who would respond to safety concerns/emergencies.
The Welcome Center and park store at Kilauea Military Camp are open and staffed by us, the park partner, in the interim.

🌋Ongoing eruption at the summit of #Kīlauea Volcano is currently paused. Next episode of lava fountaining likely to begin towards the end of next week.

🌋Kīlauea’s summit region resumed inflation on Oct. 1st. Scientists with the USGS HVO calculate Episode 35 is likely to start between Oct. 17 & 21.

Our Kai on the #Haleakalā 🌄 NP store frontline sent over pics of 2 friends on their 1st trip together. The lady in the black shirt said that this is her 1st national park, 1st passport book & first passport stamp! 🎉
It was her friend's 10th national park & that book will soon be full of stamps! 🌍
