My name is Hannah (they/them) and I am currently on a quest to knit in every public library in Vermont. I write a brief post about each visit. My hand-knitted emotional support chicken, Hen Solo, comes along. https://linktr.ee/handknitbyhannah

It was n my bucket list! And the little free library with yarn out front *swoon*

In library 165, I asked librarians Gail & Kale for a juicy story about the library I could put on the internet. They did not disappoint! You'll never look at your board the same way again.

In library 160 there was a “shushbooth” where patrons can go to release muffled primal screams. It’s also handy for conversations about taxes and other private things, or quiet reading on a day when the library has a party.

Library 157 has an incinerating toilet! We nearly didn’t make it inside, but Joanie saved the day by abandoning a battle with hornets in her kitchen to come down and open it for us. One of the quaintest so far. And hornet free. #publiclibraries #knittinginlibraries #vermont #knitsky

This library has an incinerating toilet! My first. Library director Holly said they don’t usually incinerate when patrons are there on account of not everyone enjoying the smell of burning shit. Librarians: they know their community.

In this library (in Noah Kahan’s hometown) I forgot about privacy laws and asked the librarian if Noah Kahan had a library card and she was like “nice try lol wtf privacy matters” and I was like “my bad not my business lol.”

In this library I learned why the mourning cloak should be the official butterfly of Vermont instead of the monarch. Please spread the word.

It does make knitting on my sofa and thinking about the end of the world feel slightly less grand by comparison.

While knitting at this library I mostly stared at a Jaws poster and thought about the end of the world. Carnegie libraries are a nice place to do that.

Also I made friends with two crocheters! Score.

In the darkest of times, a chipper librarian is a great remedy.

This library is in a town that was once famous for Merino sheep. A phenomenon— the Cornwall Dip— emerged whereby neighboring farmers dipped their sub-par fleeces into a vat of oils to try to replicate the lanolin of the Cornwall fleece.

This couldn’t have smelled good.

This was my first conference for librarians, which is different from conferences for academics, which I usually attend.

The difference: librarians are nice.

Haha I did not forget. But going to a library instead of a yarn store would be better on the budget! So I appreciate the suggestion.

Thank you for this recommendation! I hear there aren’t that many Cutter libraries and I hadn’t heard of it before I visited Danby, so I am interested in seeing others. I have been to Harrell’s and WEBS on previous visits to NoHo but not the Forbes!

Library #144 on my quest to knit in every public library in Vermont uses the Cutter classification system! This is rare! Also rare: a stuffed woodchuck. People don’t always chose groundhogs for the mantle. It’s usually a bird or moose. A taxidermized woodchuck is a special choice. #booksky #knitsky

Library 142 is home to two internet-famous pugs named Anouk and Toby. There was a giant Falkor head in the loft. It was queer. There was a bus of enthusiastic retirees. Also a yoyo. It was hard to leave.

This is an awesome goal! But will probably take more time considering winters. I think I will be able to finish in 3 years or so.

In this library (140th on my quest to knit in every library in Vermont) I learned that time capsules are not always buried underground, and that the fries from the fundraiser were just ok. A celebration of daily ephemera.

In the 139th stop on my quest to knit in every library in Vermont, I read a list of old rules for libraries & offer unsolicited assessment of their relevance today. I like: libraries are for everyone. I dislike: only necessary conversation. #knittinginlibraries #knitting #publiclibraries #knitsky

In the 138th library on my quest to knit in every library in Vermont, I read a box of letters from librarians after the 1927 flood, which ruined the collections from Waterbury, Montpelier, Johnson, & West Hartford (which was entirely swept away).

Library 137! Vermont has four Carnegie libraries in operation and this is one of them. The librarian, Mary, used to stand under the the dome as a child and tap dance. Libraries last a lifetime. Let’s keep it that way.
