Next, if you’ve recently uploaded your government ID to Discord, you might want to keep an eye out for an email from [email protected]. The hackers responsible for the breach that affected Discord last week reportedly stole the personal data of 5.5 million unique users, including millions of photos of IDs and potentially other sensitive information. Discord says the number is closer to 70,000 people, all of whom uploaded their IDs to appeal age-verification decisions, and that they’re reaching out to the impacted users. All of this underscores the privacy issues inherent with age verification and the rush to adopt it. But hey, won’t someone think of the children's data?

Having also been in journalism that long (but not always games explicitly) I went from having editors who said "good work gets eyeballs" in 2010 to editors who said "everyone gets that we're here to make money, right" in 2024. I wonder what happened in the interim...

When I was games press back in 2008 - 2015, no-one *ever* talked to me about "we need to report on stuff that is going to make us money"

It was just never a thing. I reported on whatever games I damn well liked, and I helped make so many small games pop off -- so so many

It's wild to me that a: someone can straight up say out loud "i have no values or morals, the only thing that guides me is personal gain" and be okay with themselves, and also that b: in a press obsessed with "objectivity" this is fine but "boy that racist guy said some racist stuff" is a problem

Apropos of nothing, I would like to point out that large companies whose business model is "serve words to the public" will typically pay between US $.10 and $3.00 per word. So when you give words to a company for free, you are in fact paying them a LOT of money.
