31 Days of Halloween
Day 18 - Star-powered Saturday
The Man from Planet X (1951)

Poverty Row director Edward G. Ulmer (THE BLACK CAT, DETOUR) gave us this film about a mean William Schallert vs. an alien who speaks in musical tones
31 Days of Halloween
Day 17 - Fish Fry-day
Piranha (1978)

Steven Spielberg called Joe Dante’s cult flick the best JAWS knock-off he’d seen, we just dig John Sayles's tale of heroes racing to stop mutated piranha before Lost River Resort turns into a bloody smorgasbord
31 Days of Halloween
Day 16 - Hammer Thorsday
The Reptile (1966)

We’d like to thank Jacqueline Pearce, the brave woman under all that Reptile make-up, for overcoming her claustrophobia during the filming of this Conan Doyle-ish costumed horror. Also: screw sulphur pools
31 Days of Halloween
Day 15 - Werewolf Wednesday
Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman (1943)

The second Wolfman film and the first to “team up” two horror icons, FMTW has two creatures, a killer opening scene, Maleva, and Bela Lugosi and Lon Chaney Jr. (seen here napping with friend)
31 Days of Halloween
Day 14 - Toy Tuesday
Green Ghost Game (Transogram, 1965)

The first glow-in-the-dark game designed to be played in the dark, the Green Ghost Game mixed ADDAMS FAMILY humor and strontium aluminate for a hopefully noncarcinogenic experience. (Note to self: see if Ron glows)
31 Days of Halloween
Day 13 - Mask Monday - Henry Alvarez, the Creature, and Ron

Master sculptor Henry Alvarez cast this life-size CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON statue from the original molds. The big green guy, here flanked by Henry and Ron, now resides in Ron’s living room
31 Days of Halloween
Day 12 - Spooky Sunday
THEM! (1954)

Despite some “shonky” ants, this ’50s radiation flick is still terrifying today, due to great tension, a strong leads, and a mute little girl. Plus, an early uncredited appearance by one Leonard Nimoy!
31 Days of Halloween
Day 11 - Star-powered Saturday
This Island Earth (1955)

Jeff Morrow and Faith Domergue have to deal with a dying planet, a plot to invade Earth, an interstellar war, AND one of the most famous BEMs (bug-eyed monsters). But he is beautiful, isn't he?
31 Days of Halloween
Hammer Thorsday
The Mummy (1959)

Kharis (Christopher Lee) was killed for trying to resurrect his beloved Princess Ananka, then the Mummy (also Lee) kills those who desecrated his beloved's tomb. Maybe we should have posted this on Valentine's Day?
31 Days of Halloween
Day 10 - Fish Fry-day*
It Came from Beneath the Sea

Ray Harryhausen pitted a six(!)-tentacled beast against San Francsco in this 1955 giant octopus movie. We're betting on Kenneth Tobey for the win

* Yes, octopi are not fish, but we're inclusive
31 Days of Halloween
Day 8 - Werewolf Wednesday
Werewolf of London (1935)

Henry Hull's Dr. Glendon paved (shaved?) the way for Lon Chaney, Jr. in this underrated masterpiece about a scientist, a wolf bite, and a blooming orchid. Who wears the hairpiece as your favorite lycanthrope?
31 Days of Halloween
Day 7 - Toy Tuesday!

Ron loved his 1979 REMCO Mini Monsters: the five 3-3/4" glow-in-the-dark big names, the Monsterizer, and the play case! Which is your favorite?

Thanks to Terror From Beyond the Dave for a trip down memory lane!

31 Days of Halloween
Day 6 - Mask Monday

Take our Wayback Machine to 1984, where Dante Renta (L) and Ron Magid (R) chill in the Mask Room. Can't you just hear the opening strains of Michael Jackson's "Thriller"?
31 Days of Halloween
Day 5 - Frankenstein (unbound)
(Not the Roger Corman classic(?))

The boss is letting us out of our cell for a few hours today so we can see James Whale's masterful 1931 film on the big screen for the first time! Thank you, Friend...
ALT TEXT: The Blob from the 1958 movie crawls toward a movie theater
31 Days of Halloween
Day 4 - Slimy Saturday
The Blob

We'll always have a soft spot in our heart for our gooey friend both there and in its 1958 premiere (Steve McQueen's first leading role!) Hug a meteorite today in the Blob's honor!
31 Days of Halloween
Day 3 - Fish Fry-day!
THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON

Today we honor underwater stuntman Ricou Browning (pictured), who played the Creature in the water, and Creature creator/sculptor Milicent Patrick, whose credit was buried for decades (cf. THE LADY FROM THE BLACK LAGOON)
The 31 Days of Halloween
Day 2 - Thorsday (cuz it's Hammer, get it? :)

Bela will always have our heart, but Christopher Lee's Dracula has our neck.

To a man who has played some of the most fearsome characters from screen and literature, raise a glass!

(Just not wine. He never drinks wine.)
The 31 Days of Halloween
Day 1
(Apologies to Simon & Garfunkel)

Hello October, my old friend
I’ve come to trick or treat with you again
Because Ben Cooper softly creeping
Left candy corn while I was sleeping
And the visions
that were planted in my brain
Still remain
Within the masks of autumn...
