2/2: We know as much as 35% of a new home cost is attributable to land speculation & govts' fees. Baked-in costs like the industrial carbon tax jack up prices & Prof Lee confirms, despite being targeted to "industry", this tax is eventually paid by consumers in higher home prices.

1/2: Who makes money from high housing prices & what contributes to these high costs? I asked Professor Ian Lee, Associate Professor of Management at the Sprott School at Carleton University, when he appeared at the House Finance Committee.

Tomorrow (Thursday) is my Pints and Politics event for young professionals.

Join me for a beverage and let's talk about "projects of national interest" and other issues of critical importance to young professionals such as cost of living, housing, and careers.

The world will continue to use oil and gas for decades. They can buy responsibly produced product from Canada, or buy from countries with sub-standard environmental & human rights practices. Keeping Canada's O&G in the ground will not reduce global emissions. In fact, it will likely mean increases.

Please don't name-call on my feed. The pipeline just built - TMX - is operating at 80-85% of capacity, which is close to ideal level. New pumping stations & other improvements will increase flow. Since it takes years to build a pipeline we cannot wait until TMX overflows before planning for another.

Part of the process is to identify the private sector proponents. To facilitate that, fed govt must remove legislative barriers to investment: Bills C-69 & C-48, O&G production cap & industrial carbon tax. They must also assure investors that rules won't change in the middle of the project.

Alberta must identify private sector proponents. Fed Govt must remove legislative barriers to investment: Bills C-69 & C-48, O&G production cap & industrial carbon tax. They must assure investors they won't change rules part way through. And they must stop pretending the responsibility isn't theirs.

May your Thanksgiving weekend be filled with laughter, love, and warmth.

And if you are able to do so, please consider making a donation or volunteering with one of Calgary's many non-profits that help to make this weekend special for everyone.

Pipelines don't start fires. Typically, people start fires. Far better the world use responsibly produced Cdn product rather than product from countries with sub-standard environmental and human rights practices. Because the world WILL buy and use oil and gas. It is a question of who they buy from.

I disagree. Every discussion I've seen on new projects - not just pipelines - includes the important caveat that Indigenous Canadians must be not only consulted and heard, but included in planning & implementation to receive economic & jobs benefits, and ensure projects respect their interests.

5/5: The Constitution and legal precedent is abundantly clear.

Carney's government must stop with the excuses and get out of the way.
gregmcleanyyc.bsky.social
4/5: The Minister of Energy told the Senate yesterday that a pipeline would ‘need the support of the jurisdiction you build through.’

That is incorrect.

It is notable that 56% of British Columbians, and 59% of all Canadians, already support the proposed new pipeline.
gregmcleanyyc.bsky.social
3/5: The courts have ruled on this question again and again. When it comes to interprovincial pipelines, the federal govt has the sole power to decide. Full stop.

This was confirmed by Dawn Farrell, head of the new 'Major Projects Office,' who said yesterday that ‘there is no veto’ from provinces.
gregmcleanyyc.bsky.social
2/5: Section 92.10(a) of the Constitution is clear: projects ‘extending beyond the Limits of the Province’ are entirely within the federal government’s exclusive jurisdiction.

Not the provinces or premiers – Ottawa.
gregmcleanyyc.bsky.social
🧵1/5: It is worth reminding Canadians - and the federal government - that provinces do not have a veto over inter-provincial pipelines, like the one proposed by the Alberta government.

3/3: We are happy to work with the government in moving past those barriers.

Building KXL means there must also be product to move through it.

2/3: PM Carney should know that the Official Opposition will support him if he gets this crucial project moving.

Major projects will proceed more smoothly with private sector investors if we first get rid of anti-development laws like C-69, C-48, the production cap and the industrial carbon tax.
gregmcleanyyc.bsky.social
1/3: Conservatives are pleased to hear President Trump and Mark Carney are open to reconsidering KXL.

It's been delayed a long time since the Harper administration approved it in 2010, so it might be hard to resuscitate, but talking is the first step.

2/2: Vote in Advance Polls until this Saturday Oct 11.

1/2: Knocking on doors with Marina Ortman, candidate for City Council in Ward 9.

She's a great choice to serve on council. Self-employed, community-engaged, focused on fixing the problems she's encountered at City Hall, including her success in keeping our public pool open in Inglewood.

Tonight begins the weeklong Jewish holiday that comes five days after Yom Kippur and celebrates the gathering of the harvest. It also commemorates the miraculous protection G‑d provided for the children of Israel when they left Egypt. Chag Sameach!

4/4: It is entirely possible to craft legislation that targets law breakers without constraining Canadians who are lawfully going about their business.
gregmcleanyyc.bsky.social
3/4:
- Focus on law breakers;
- Restore order at the border;
- Block or remove fraudulent refugees;
- Allow Canadians to send mail, use the internet and do lawful cash transactions; the bill should focus on preventing and apprehending UNLAWFUL transactions.
gregmcleanyyc.bsky.social
2/4: There are some useful elements in C-2 that would help secure our borders, but those measures come packaged with provisions that would violate individual privacy.

We ask that the intrusive measures be removed, and a bill be presented that would:
