Well now, would you look at that?

A massive study of NEARLY 300,000 people in the United States found that receiving an updated 2024-2025 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine REDUCED people’s risk of severe disease AND death in ALL age groups, REGARDLESS of immunity from prior infection or vaccination.

Bamboo's a nasty invasive in many places, like Puerto Rico. Turning it into a commodity would have a double benefit. (although I know such "eat the invasives" programs rarely work out)

One of the reasons i enjoyed parenting is that neither of my kids played organized sports. (or organized dance, for that matter)

You have my sympathies.

A reminder that the "supplement" industry bribed - sorry, lobbied Congress so that it wouldn't be regulated at all. Because industry can police itself better than those so-called experts, right?

Very fascinated with the actor-driven podcast ecosystem. Ted Danson has one where he interviews other famous people
He works for Conan’s podcast company which…interviews other famous people. The Smartless guys of Bateman, Arnett, Hayes interview famous people, as does Amy Pohlers podcast. &c

Portsmouth is the snootiest part of NH so being rude about it is also traditional here, although we haven't invented a good nickname for it

"Have you tried turning it off and then ..."

The ocean is 10,000X worse of an environment for any built structure than a reservoir. I wouldn't hold your breath.

Then again, I would have thought "floating vertical solar" was a ridiculous idea (I mean, vertical?!?!?!) so who knows?

Find a 4-year-old boy and bring him over to stand and stare. They won't be able to resist showing him what they're doing.

as you know, the city's land has grown a lot since then, making it harder to correspond it to today

In July 1863, Oliver Wendel Holmes wrote in the “Atlantic Monthly”: “The Old South and Trinity Church are two landmarks not to be mistaken. Washington Street slants across the picture as a narrow cleft. Milk Street winds ...

This is sort of a cousin to the, apparently accurate, statement that the Massachusetts colony fed lobsters to inmates because they were so plentiful and nobody else wanted to eat those giant ocean insects.

Not only will drivers hurt walkers more at higher speeds, they're more likely to hit them in the first place.

Remember, whenever you hear that “speed wasn’t a factor” in a deadly crash, what they mean is that the car involved wasn’t technically speeding. At least “not by much.” It presumes that the speed limit wasn’t too high to begin with.

When it comes to death from collisions, SPEED IS ALWAYS a factor.

TIL that when New Hampshire decided to build a state hospital for "the insane" in 1838, Portsmouth wanted to be the site. Among its arguments:

that it was “the best fish market in the world and that fish was the cheapest and best food for insane persons”

That's one of the best ways to make the grid reliable in the 21st century.

Which is the century we're living in, although certain people in power are trying to pretend otherwise.

I missed that one. But he created one of the rare characters who made me laugh every time he trotted out his signature line - usually those get old with repetition and wither on the funnybone vine.
