It certainly did the job for the cane Corso and Argentine doggo! Necer had wolf dogs, though I did care for some gray wolves at a sanctuary for a time, but we didn't take them for walkies. We did however have a live in monster Irish wolf hound though, and I was the only one who could walk him haha

The other end was connected to a chest harness on the various big breeds I was fostering and rehabilitating. If I ever lost control of the leash I wouldn't lose the dog. Worst case I would drop to a squat and that would keep me stable till I could get the leash back.

Protip from someone who handled a lot of rescue large breeds, if you have the body mass to handle it, use a secondary emergency leash. I had one of those 10 foot cable ties for attaching to a yard stake, it was connected with a climbing rated carabiner to my belt, which was a thick leather one.
