More to the point, our institutions are so inimical to citizen participation in our own government that we cannot really predict what the outcome would actually be if we could vote for, say, designer vaginas. All I can say for sure is that under our system, only the elites can choose any of this.

Maybe that means mild social democracy or maybe it means that the Senate, originally gerrymandered explicitly to preserve slavery with the Missouri compromise, isn't a legitimate institution we should preserve. Same for the court. What would be the outcome of that?

Drennen is half right to notice the tension between a lack of democracy and queer flourishing, but she fails to understand how the current system is clearly, *already* the state of affairs she wants to avoid.

By all means, do electoralism, but for fucks sake, please have some plausible goals.

1. Does not pay for healthcare, and yet
2. Uses central authority to prohibit or discourage care such as HRT, PrEP, contraceptive care, or even vaccination.

There's an understated tendency within liberalism to convince people that queerness can only flourish under liberal democracy & center left politics-- or more specifically, under NATO countries and not what respectable people see as backwards.

One reason some people talk about politics so much is that we've devalued mundanity. Everything has to *matter*, we put so much pressure on people to work toward something, but this is unrealistic. So some people lean into politics, the apparent tide of history. What could matter more?
