Welcome

This was the first cemetery photo I ever took - Stanley Cemetery, Tasmania. Three weathered crosses, standing watch over the sea, quietly invited me into a world of memory, history, and stillness. That moment became the beginning of Gardens of the Silent.

Thanks for visiting.

Kev
Three weathered stone crosses stand in the foreground of Stanley Cemetery, Tasmania, overlooking a calm blue sea and distant green headland.

The late afternoon light casts soft shadows across the graves, blending the solemnity of remembrance with the serenity of the coastal landscape.

A black and white close up photo shows several commemorative objects resting on a polished granite surface, likely a tombstone or memorial.

From left to right: a small, empty, clear glass jar with a black lid; a stack of paper or perhaps a small, open book; a small figurine of a winged fairy seated near the center; and a tall, slender black metal lantern with glass panes.

The objects are in sharp focus, while the background, which contains flowers, is softly blurred.

A close up photograph of a statue of the Virgin Mary (Madonna) set into a carved niche on a dark, polished headstone.

The small, white or ivory colored figure stands at the base of the niche, which is outlined in black and white stone to form a pointed, Gothic archway.

Above the figure, a simple cross is carved into the stone. The surrounding surface of the headstone is a dark, glossy material with golden, engraved text visible on either side and blurring into the background.

A low angle close-up view of a unique gravesite. A small, weathered, light grey boulder serves as the headstone, with a rectangular bronze plaque mounted on the front.

On top of the boulder is a tall, slender wrought iron cross with an ornate, stylized design, painted in a rust-red and pale blue grey color scheme.

The grave is located in a cemetery, with dry, reddish brown mulch and dirt on the ground. Other headstones and graves, including a large dark granite one with flowers, are visible out of focus in the background, along with green trees and a road.

Day 11: Military

Flight Sub-Lieutenant Reginald Alexander John “Rex” Warneford

More info on his career in the alt text,

Brompton Cemetery, London
#31daysofgraves

A vertical stone memorial in Brompton Cemetery, dedicated to Flight Sub-Lieutenant Reginald Alexander John “Rex” Warneford, VC, RNAS. The headstone is in the form of a Roman-altar-like monument on a tall base. At the top is a pediment bearing a relief of the Victoria Cross. Below that is a carved portrait relief of Warneford in uniform, flanked by inverted torches and a bay-leaf wreath or festoon. Beneath his likeness are the words COURAGE INITIATIVE INTREPIDITY.

Lower still is a relief panel showing Warneford’s famous exploit: a Zeppelin airship engulfed in flames, plummeting to earth, with billowing smoke, and Warneford’s aircraft nearby. Inscription notes that the memorial was “erected by the readers of the Daily Express to commemorate the heroic exploit in destroying a Zeppelin airship near Ghent on June 7 1915.”. It stands among other graves and headstones, under trees, with grass around its base.

7 June 1915, over Belgium near Ghent (after chasing a German Zeppelin from Ostend). He dropped bombs from his aircraft (a Morane type) on the airship LZ-37, successfully setting it alight so that it crashed. The explosion damaged his own aircraft, his engine stopped, and crash landed behind enemy lines. He made repairs, restarted his engine (after some time) and managed to fly back to base

For that action he was awarded the Victoria Cross, and also the Légion d’honneur from France

Tragically, less than two weeks later (17 June 1915), he died in a flying accident at Buc aerodrome near Paris. The right wing of his aircraft failed during a climb; he was carrying an American journalist, Henry Beach Needham. Both were thrown out; Needham died immediately; Warneford was fatally injured

His funeral in Brompton Cemetery (21 June 1915) was a major event where mourners lined the streets. The memorial headstone was paid for by public subscription readers of the Daily Express newspaper.
