Indigenous people and LGBTQ+ history
Historically, LGBTQ+ Native Americans used terms for gender-related social roles unique to their specific tribe and tribal language. For many tribes, people were historically defined more by their roles in relation to their partner and their tribe, and viewing people as simply male or female was an idea first introduced by colonists.
Two-spirit is an English term that emerged in 1990 to describe Indigenous North Americans who fulfill one of many mixed gender roles found traditionally among indgenous groups. Male and female Two-Spirits have been documented in over 130 tribes, in every region of North America.
Two-Spirits have had distinct gender and social roles in their tribes.
They could have been:
Healers
Special role players in sundance or other ceremonies
Medicine persons
Convyers of oral traiditions
Name givers
Caregivers for orphaned children

Just finished season 2 of Umamuseume and wow it's genuinely one of the best pieces of fiction I've ever consumed. This show has given me a lot more than I expected, including a motivation to never give up. More respect needs to be put on the name Tokai Teio, and I need y'all to watch it.
