But you don't have to get off your couch for those. You're paying for the home delivery, not the cuisine. With Bigham, you have to pop down to Waitrose or M&S.

One of the reasons everyone thought a deal was imminent was because the rate at which Israel rounds up Palestinians for detention increased over recent months. You can see the stats here: hamoked.org/prisoners-ch...

How quickly we conveniently forgot the role that the EU played in Starmer's ascension, and the role of the likes of Behr in raising expectations. And surely even he knows that the idea of a new entente cordiale has always been a daydream in the face of the Franco-German EU axis.

As usual, when Behr slips into his portentous world-historical register it simply reveals his shallowness. the Thatcher-Reagan alliance was forged by neoliberalism, not personal chemistry, and the idea of a "spark" from Clinton to Blair is just West Wingery at its worst.

This is an object lesson in what happens when you can only see politics through the lens of personality, ignoring interests. The parallel between Cameron and Macron's vanity is silly. The real parallel is the alienating effect of auserity.

The crisis engulfing Emmanuel Macron contains a warning for Keir Starmer | Rafael Behr
The French president dominated the centre ground but has failed to build a legacy there. Labour is in danger of doing the same, says Guardian columnist Rafael Behr

Obviously yer man doesn't target the plebs, but surely even his middle-class market knows that you can get a main course in a local restaurant or pub for £15, even in that there London.

Football hooligan, fraudster, journalist. Is there no limit to this man's talents? The serious point here is that it looks like police over-reach, so Robinson may well get off, in which case Musk will be dumb enough to think it money well spent.

The govt didn't "do something" about News International, beyond kybosh Leveson II, so why would they do someting about GBNews?
polprofsteve2024.bsky.social
I am completely dumbfounded by Labour’s reluctance to take on these people and to apply legal restraints to foreign interference in our politics and while I’m at it do something about GBNews! Does anybody have any sensible explanation for this reluctance?

Taking on Elon Musk should be an open goal in British politics.

Did a rough count of the column inches devoted at the front of today's Guardian to Israeli vs Palestinian hostages. It's 3:1. The ratio of those released is 1:10 (20 vs 2,000), which means that each Israeli hostage received roughly 30 times as much regard as each Palestinian.

Mary Whitehouse was widely viewed as nuts, but she got a national platform because it suited the media and certain politicians. For a more recent example, consider how the anti-trans panic was fuelled by the press and certain MPs after a period when trans rights were not in dispute.

Right-wingers who think tactics they've used to criminalize abortion in the US will have the same kind of traction in the UK fail to grasp that religious fundamentalism is widely viewed as nuts in the UK, & has been for many decades, if not centuries.

As much chance of abolishing UK gun controls.

The right-wing campaign group that helped topple Roe v Wade in the US is now working to roll back abortion laws in the UK, with the help of Nigel Farage.

Its first step? Trying to create a debate around "free speech"

That's certainly the most significant geopolitical story of the last half century. I'd suggest the most significant economic story is the diversion of capital from production and public goods to financial speculation and over-hyped equities.

The most significant economic story of the last half century is how the global manufacturing center of gravity moved from the North Atlantic to China.

In about 5 years time, Israel will probably insist that it has to invade Gaza again to clear out the Dughmush clan, which it armed against Hamas, just as it once indirectly supported Hamas against the PLO.

"Rogan and others in the right-leaning podcast manosphere are thought to have swung the 2024 election in Donald Trump’s favour, prompting much soul-searching on the American left about its media game, and why they need a Joe Rogan of their own". Just breath-takingly stupid.
fromarsetoelbow.bsky.social
Hard to believe the Guardian still imagines that a rich lawyer, now making money hand-over-fist on YouTube and who once interned for Hillary Clinton, is the voice the "American left" has been waiting for.

Pretty sure it was Starmer winning the leadership election.
fromarsetoelbow.bsky.social
I still think the key to understanding Starmer is that he hasn't got a clue what he's doing but he actively enjoys firing people.
fromarsetoelbow.bsky.social
Lol at "Praetorian Guard", but what's really amazing is that they're still using the "grown-ups back in charge" line. These people aren't simply dim - they are incapable of original thought.

New blogpost: Save the Tories - The Guardian has shown more concern for the enfeebled state of the Conservative Party than the Tory press, but this reflects their fears over Starmer's Labour Party rather than a desire for a balanced political centre.

Because 1) no govt has challenged the Thatcherite dispensation in the economy, welfare or housing; 2) the Tory papers remain forever grateful for her indulgence of them; and 3) liberals were happy she did their work for them (and took the flak).
