Hey everyone. I never would have imagined that I’ll be posting this one day, but I’m writing this to let you know that I’ll be stepping away from my art accounts indefinitely. To be completely transparent, I’ve been fighting a battle against burnout for a long time. Over the past year, I’ve struggled to create even a decent artwork. A major part of this is the lack of consistent client work and low engagement. On top of that, I’ve had people close to me tell me to just stop drawing altogether, and worse, I’ve had a client verbally express to me that they’d “rather pay for AI” than mine. When you combine all of this with the intense focus I need for my board exam, the passion is just gone. I can no longer create work that feels authentic. Simply put: somewhere along the way, the artist in me went quiet. As a result, I’ve shifted my focus to prioritizing my mental health. Right now, my relationship with my own art is unhealthy—I have been telling myself that “maybe I’m just not good enough,” or “maybe I’m not meant to be an artist.” At one point, looking at my past work disgusted me. And I know these are serious mental issues that need attention. I’m just so emotionally and mentally drained to draw now and I’m really, really tired. I also know that continuing to push myself in this state only deepens the resentment, and I don’t want to risk losing whatever love I still have for drawing. So, I’m choosing to step back. I’ve been deactivating my accounts a few weeks ago, but I ultimately decided to leave them up. Even with the difficult feelings they bring up, I think they deserve to stay as a reminder, or maybe as a bridge back to drawing if I ever rediscover that spark.

Sincerest thanks and appreciation to those who have supported me along the way. Really, your commissions and kindness carried me farther than I thought I could go.

...and now I have to keep sprinting to keep up. It's like no matter how far I go, the scoreboard is there to keep reminding me that I'm behind everyone else.

And the cruelest part is, on some days, I wish I'd never stepped onto the track at all.

it's always that my 100% ends up being someone's 20% only.

So I learn quite a coping mechanism for this: I smile, nod, and keep my frustrations to myself, because nothing's more confusing to a dreamer than someone who insultingly half-assed their dream then calls themselves a dumbo.

I want to think this feeling is probably just guilt. That choking, gnawing feeling knowing my peers are people who make genius look effortless because this is their dream. They've spent years chasing this; while I only learned the rules halfway through and have been bluffing ever since.

At first I'll get the pity comments. Cue the "but you're also smart!" and "grades are just numbers!" They say this again and again like a preacher hyping a crowd--until our exam scores come out, and suddenly, people ask what's my surname again.

I don't think I'm a total dumbo. But when I'm surrounded by people whose brains seem to run on pure genius while mine runs on coffee and spite, I begin to wonder how I got here in the first place. (vent 🧵)
